For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a Navy ship in WWII, the risks were high. Not just the risk of death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery, of discharge, imprisonment or worse. Only a special kind of love was worth taking that chance. Meet the Author

I've been writing as long as I can remember (which is longer than I like to admit). I started creating M/M romances in high-school, filling binders with stories about what Starsky and Hutch really did on their days off. (Pretty PG-rated stuff - we're talking sheltered fourteen-year-old here. I was into the romantic possibilities.) Any potential writing career got side-tracked by forays into art, psychology, teaching, and a biomedical profession. And the challenges of raising children.

When I took up the keyboard again it was just for fun, writing books for my own entertainment. At about manuscript seven, my epically patient spouse told me that if I was going to spend that much time at it, I should try to get published. And he kept saying it, loudly, until I submitted one. And it was accepted! (Really exciting!) That's Life Lessons that was published May 2011 MLR Press. A short story, And to All a Good Night, that follows it is available here for free. The sequel, Breaking Cover, came out from MLR in late July. And I'm currently in the editing process for other work, including a werewolf novel, Unacceptable Risk.

My Smashwords book, Lies and Consequences, started as a kind of reaction after the November 2010 elections when the DADT repeal looked like it might be derailed. Then I was caught by surprise as I finished the book in December and the repeal passed. I tweaked it by upping the action, and deemphasizing the DADT subplot. The result was something lightweight, but hopefully fun. So I put it out as a free read. I hope you enjoy it. As a new author, I really appreciate reviews - what you liked and what you didn't. Remember those other six manuscripts? (Okay, nine now.) Maybe your comment will help turn the next good book into a better book. KH

    Omg

This was so completely amazing. It was filled with so much emotion and love from start to finish. It was kind of nice to read a romance that spans a lifetime, especially a gay romance. Reading of their first meeting; that shy, awkward first sexual experience; the gradual falling in love; the hardship of years spent apart during dangerous times; growing older together with all the normal couple difficulties to deal with, as well as figuring out how "out" to be at a time when being gay was definitely not accepted. Everything combined to make this an incredible story. Nearly 500 pgs.

    Beautiful story of love.

Graphic in some parts but a very beautiful well written story. Very detailed. Some parts brought such emotion I had to use a tissue.

    Must Read

Kaje Harper is one of my favorite authors, and this story is my newest favorite. It's a sweet, sexy tale following through the lives and times of two World War II sailors. Tragic in places, it is nonetheless a compelling novel full of live.

Absolutely amazing - well written and well researched!

    Adorable love story

This book is a very good novel. The chatacters are set up well, and in a way that makes it easy to relate to their situations.

This story is about two young saliors who are dealing with their sexuality during WW2. The men gradually realize that the othe is also gay, and they plan their whirlwind romance on a ship.
The story progresses to after the War, with each of them dealing, together, with their sexualty in an openly private king of way.
The book ends VERY sweetly. I highly reccommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a sweet gay love story with mildish sex.

I read this book and swore someone had siphoned my brain, becaus

I read this book and swore someone had siphoned my brain, because I lived it, in a more modern era, but no matter the time period, real love is real love. The Navy was years away from "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", but "K" and I became so intertwined with each other--we served on a nuclear submarine--and we held fast to our "impossible" situation that nothing could break it. Luckily, we had friends we could trust to hold our secret. We didn't have the luxury of decades, but the time we had was magical, sometimes a bit sad, sometimes a bit silly, but always so real. Our ending was not quite as perfect as was "Into Deep Waters", and all these years later I still get an unexpected memory, tied to a song, a place, a time. And I regret none of it, though I wonder at the bravery of the young, and that we came close to being found out, but the chances taken still make me smile, and sometimes wistful...
I prefaced this review with part of my own experiences because "Into Deep Waters" took me on such an emotional ride, and told the truth. It made me remember and laugh and cry and validated my belief that no matter what, a person KNOWS the joy and wonders of love and will do anything to experience that time--no matter how long or how short--shared together. My first reaction after finishing "Into Deep Waters" was to wonder why I didn't get the blessing of many years. Luckily, I've been around long enough to know the answer is simple: as long as love is deep, real and unafraid, the length of time is not as important as the experience of the time. Love is never easy, because there is no longer just one life involved; two souls are now willingly bound. And with love, honor and respect to sweeten that love, anything is possible.
Please do yourself a favor and immerse yourself into this beautiful story, and leave your apprehensions, pre-conceptions (and everything you THINK you know) behind. Kaje Harper will take you to places you've been, feelings you've felt, places you've never been and feelings you've always wanted to experience.

A truly beautiful story. I enjoyed the peek into the lives of military men in WWII very much.
Their story seemed so real, not too romanticized but still a romance.

    Amazing story!

Read this soon after the Supreme Courts ruling on DOMA and Prop 8, and I was just so emotional throughout. Love this author, she has done an excellent job of bringing to light history, the struggles and trials faced by our returning Veterans, as well as the experience of being gay in the military. Just a beautiful story. If you read m/m fiction, this is a must read!

This is a wonderful novel, with realistic characters, exciting wartime action scenes, suspense, and quite a tender-hearted romance. It was easy to become involved with the characters, and I cared about them as the story progressed. The sexual encounters were beautifully written and evocative of first love. It is great to find a full-length story that captures the heart, stimulates the soul, and leaves a lasting impression. Read "Into Deep Waters" and try not to get teary-eyed.

    Great read

I have over 900 e-books and 400 paperbacks which don't include the hundreds and hundreds I have read but not kept and this book lands in my top 20 overall. I was so pleasantly surprised as I have never read this author before. Now I cannot wait to read more.

Amazing character development, wonderfully written plot lines, beautiful romance, and great sex all intertwine to make an emotional but feel good read. It kept me riveted from the first page to the last!

    Wonderful Book!

This book covers the romance of two men from the time they meet in World War II until they are in their late 70's. I really enjoyed the books a lot. Only thing I didn't like is that the author spends a lot of time when they first meet and then the last 50 years or so is skimmed over a lot. Like there will be a 20 year gap from one chapter to the next. But other than that it is a great book and I would recommend it.
