What do you do when the dead open their eyes?

Meet Stephenie Paige. She finds herself trapped in Hell. Not metaphorically, but physically. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Meet Carrie, Stephenie's daughter; she's five years old and cute as a button. And when she tells her mom that she needs the bathroom, her mom says, "No problem. I'll pull the car off the road at the next available place."

Welcome to King's Diner, the gateway to eternal suffering.

Carrie enters the restaurant while Stephenie has her hands full at the gas pump. But the pump isn't working, and the attendant is nowhere to be found. So she steps inside the restaurant...

...and discovers a slaughterhouse. The customers are dead; the staff are dead too. Twenty-odd people, chopped apart with an axe. There's blood everywhere.

Worse still... Carrie is suddenly missing.

***

From the author of THE DEAD PARADE, 13 DROPS OF BLOOD, and TERROR TOWN, comes more hardcore horror for those that like their fiction to be ultra-scary...

Zombies: Check! Vampires: Check! Gouls & Ghosts: Check! Gratuitous violence and gore: Check! Baby killing: What!?

Let me first say that I could not put this book down. For better or worse I was glued to the story and had to know what hellish thing would follow each of the horrific circumstances the lead character finds herself in. This is a brutal and creepy story that really never lets you up for air. At times I felt like I was drowning in hell with her. Make no mistake, the author has no qualms with usually taboo subject matter like baby killing. This is not in anyway an uplifting story, and it's not meant to be. It's hell, and it certainly feels that way when reading it.

My issue here and the reasoning behind the low rating is that a larger story is hinted at but nothing ever really pans out. Apparently Stephanie has an evil destiny that certain nefarious characters reveal to her but we never find out what it is. There are several time travel sequences in the story that seemingly have no relation to all the other hellish things you're reading about. Why? How is it adding to her character arc? Stephanie doesn't evolve and doesn't learn anything over the course of the story. If we're going to invest our time to be in hell with your character at least make it worthwhile in the end. She doesn't become a better mother or a better person from her experience. She doesn't seek answers. She is seemingly in shock the entire time and simply reacts to her situation. Other than her drive to occasionally save her daughter and get out of the hell she was dragged into, there is no redeeming quality about her. I'm just left wondering, what was the point? I think the answer is, shockingly, gore for the sake of it. I typically like that, but the story itself didn't hold up here.

    Serious Horror

This book is scary, and very well written. It's about a woman that has lost her daughter in the worst place you can imagine. I couldn't put it down.

    Insane!

This book has a classic setup with classic settings but it's told so differently that it is unlike anything I have read before. The main character Stephanie and her daughter step into a restaurant that is actually a gateway to hell. Lots of zombies, lots of scary moments, and on of the most unexpected endings ever. You should read this book.

    Wasted money

This book is not worth buying. From the very beginning, it is unbelievable as the mother flip flops between running away or searching for her young daughter. REALLY????? I dont know a single mother whio would not go into hell looking to kick ass or die to save her child. It goes downhill from there. Be wiser than me. Spend your money on something better than this........
