Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
A very young girl takes us through the activities of her day with her mother, from waking and breakfast, through shopping and play, to bath and bed. The language is simple, the type is large, and the text is spare. Throughout shines the loving, rich relationship, the encouraging support between mother and child. Ohi uses her watercolor and ink drawings in an equally loving manner, using body language and facial expressions to illuminate the relationship in mostly close-ups with just a few appropriate props. We can see the gradual tiring of the mother and the unlimited energy of the appealing daughter. 2000, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Ages 2 to 6, $14.95. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-A little girl relates the day's activities beginning with waiting for her mother to awaken in the morning to falling asleep while she lies beside her at night. Together they do household chores, dress, shop for groceries, play in the park, read, etc. There is no male representation in the story. The child strongly emulates her mother and wants to be like her when she grows up. Realistic pictures support the text right down to the endpapers that match the yellow floral pattern of the protagonist's dress. Ohi's use of mottled tones lends a quiet contentedness to the story. As the day winds down, vignettes surrounded by large white spaces replace the earlier double-page spreads. The pacing is further slowed by briefer text until the child falls asleep. A gentle book for cozy bedtime sharing.-Susan Garland, Maynard Public Library, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
