Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
"Save your friends. Rule the ocean." This battle cry, on the book's cover, says it all. Gray, the megalodon shark is at it again. The book, third in the "Shark Wars" series, opens with a battle tournament between Gray and great white, Lochlan boola Nakka Fiji—or Lochlan, for short. This mock fight is more than play, however. Gray and King Lochlan, head of the AuzyAuzy Shiver, have banded together to thwart the evil emperor, Finnivus, who, in Book Two, was vanquished but not defeated. The stakes? Peace in the oceans. But are they prepared for the revenge Finnivus is certainly planning? When the evil emperor's soldier sharks attack, Gray and free sharks everywhere lose beloved friends and, whether Gray is ready or not, he must become the strong, confident leader that all of sharkkind needs. His destiny is revealed when Takiza, his Siamese Fighting Fish Yoda-like mentor, reveals an ancient prophecy: "He shall come from the depths/of oceans prehistore/He will face an evil empire/as from ancient lore./Raised in warm Caribbi waters,/by coral adored/by coral abhorred,/a megalodon will arise/and win the unwinnable war." Is Gray some sort of shark messiah? If so, peace will not come easily. The book is filled with bloody battle after bloody battle that includes moves with clever names: the Topside Rip, the Sunfish Greets the Morn, Manta Ray Rising. Sea Snake Engarde, Sea Pike Pirouette and Cuttlefish Strikes the Crab are only a few. Add a near-death experience when Gray goes into the Sparkle Blue and sees beloved friends, deceased, who send him back into the Big Blue (not ready?), as well as an epic journey to enlist the help of the orcas, led by Tik-Tun and there is no end to the action, including an epic battle to rival the Spartans versus the Persians. Altbacker is too clever by half. His cute names, mythical motifs and jibes that mirror a convoluted ocean pecking order are confusing and young readers will need to pay close attention as they read. While I applaud the author's clever efforts to reach out to reluctant and young readers, I just do not like the series. Action is bloody and violent, and the anthropomorphic, sarcastic interaction among the characters becomes tedious. As I have mentioned before, the ocean dwellers in the series do not act the least bit like their real world counterparts. Do not look for genuine shark—or any other creature—behavior. Do these books "have bite" as stated on the back cover? Yeah—the wrong kind. More books in the series are forthcoming. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
