Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melyssa Malinowski
Tom swift knows he is a genius and no he is not bragging. As the son of a world famous inventor, brilliance is the norm. The story opens with Tom testing a shark repelling wet suit in the middle of a shark feeding frenzy at the local aquarium with the help of his best friends Yo and Bud. With a little heart pounding and the aid of his friends, Tom makes it through that adventure relatively unscathed. With that success under his belt, Tom is elated when his father invites him on a research expedition to study volcanic activity on the ocean floor. Everything is going as planned until the ship looses contact with the submersible, Verne-1, during an underwater earthquake and subsequent avalanche. Tom has little time to figure out how to get to the ocean floor and save his dad. Can Tom beat the clock? Can he find the Verne-1? Can he survive the rescue mission? Adventure fans will love this engaging and entertaining story. Tom is overly smart, which could be a problem for some readers, but he is well balanced by the supporting characters. In the end, each character has his or her own unique skill to bring to enhance the story. This book would be great for an elementary school library. It would also be a great book for boy, though girls would enjoy it too. Reviewer: Melyssa Malinowski
Children's Literature
Great adventure! Exciting plot! Fun to read! Ah, Tom Swift sure brought back memories of all the super heroes I read as a child. Tome, Bud, and Yo are on a research vessel to observe a new invention created by Mr. Swift. There is great anticipation and excitement as they are about to test a submersible called Verne-I whose purpose is to lay an entire network of seismometers on the floor of the sea. Once in place, the plan is that the network will be able to detect and warn of upcoming earthquakes and volcanic explosions. The day was great…what possibly could go wrong? Everyone is on the ship Nestor going to the location where the dive would take place. Tom's father boards the Verne 1 and the dive begins—only an undersea quake happens, breaks up the Nester, and all contact with Tom's father is lost. " ‘Dad! Dad! Do you read me?" There was a crackling of static. "‘Tom…can't…maneuver…avalan-.' The transmission was cut off abruptly." The excitement begins! Thank goodness Tom has Q. U. I. P.—Quantum Utilizing Interactive Processor, a computerized artificial intelligence—inside his watch. This is a great book for both boys and girls who like adventures. It keeps the readers' interest, moves along smoothly, and has well developed and likable characters. This book would also work well as a read-aloud book. The back cover reminds readers not to miss Tom's next adventure. I will be looking forward to it. 2006, Aladdin Paperbacks, Ages 8 to 12.
