Overview

Sam Reston's world is dangerous, uncertain, violent . . . with no room in it for the helpless and weak. Then the most beautiful woman in the world moves next door to him . . .

Nicole Pearce's life is complicated enough. The last thing she needs is to get involved with a secretive, hard-bodied, hard-headed neighbor. Yet Sam leaves her breathless—her body tingling with desire—and it takes every ounce of her fabled control to resist offering herself to him, no strings attached. What she doesn't know is that Sam Reston is on an undercover assignment . . . and she's about to step into the crossfire.

Never has Sam ached for a woman so badly. Now Nicole's in grave danger and he will become her shield. Because a terrorist plot hatched half a world away is heading to their doorstep—and it can be derailed by only one man and one woman.

    So-so book by good author

Lisa Marie Rice is one of my favorite steamy romantic suspense writers, but you'd never know it by this book. Closer to 2.5 stars than 3, Into the Crossfire is about as cliche ridden a book as I've seen lately. I realized in the first 7 pages, after reading how breathless former SEAL turned security specialist Sam Reston was each time he saw the 'most beautiful woman in the world', Nicole Pearce, I was in for a real disappointment, but I kept hoping. Pages and pages of hero and heroine with pounding hearts, the loss of coherent conversation, and, well, breathlessness. Never have I read a more overwrought opening chapter for a romantic suspense novel. It was classic old-fashioned bodice ripper stuff, only worse.

Unfortunately, the first third of the book could easily have been shortened by 60 or more pages to create a more tightly written story line - or at least one that had the kind of suspense and action one expects in romantic suspense. All that breathlessness and so little story made for dull reading. There was the typical sex scene where - I'm sure you'll be shocked - they were breathless and neither could speak due to all that chemistry and .......... probably oxygen deprivation from all that breathlessness.

The story finally gets moving, sort of, in the last third of the book. Unfortunately, time is past for developing the kind of thrills a romantic suspense novel should have. Heroine is saved, hero is well, heroic, bad guys are foiled, but chief bad guy goes to England to try again. Predictable. Her die hard fans will love this regardless.

Try the books in her Midnight series, especially Midnight Man from Ellora's Cave for a much better steamy romantic suspense story.

    I Also Recommend:

    Just Ok

I was disappointed in this book. There was too much focus on the outside conflict, and not enough love story. I was hoping this would be in the same vein as her Midnight series which I adore. The love story for me was unrealistic, the characters and their attraction to each other weren't developed enough to make their love believable. The love scenes were few and hurried. I still am an LMR fan though so I'll still continue to pick up her books. I just hope the rest of the series focuses more on the relationships.

    Awesome

    ## Absolutely amazing. Loved everything about this book. The story and the characters were fabulous. The chemistry between the two leads was tremendous. Also loved the loyalty between the brothers ( i hope they both have stories ). The hero was so YUM (for lack of a better word) and the sex was HOT ! Read this!

This is the first book in this series and I also read the second one, can't wait for the third one to come out. This is a very good read and well as all her other books.

    Excellent read

Excellent read, just came across this author and started buying her nook books. Love Sam Reston, my kind of hero. This story was exciting but I started skimming through parts that gave too much infor, to get to the exciting part. Still I would highly recommend.

    very enjoyable

Another reviewer wrote that this book is the typical alpha male, breathless sex type novel. I suppose that's true, but if you enjoy that kind of book, you'll also enjoy this one. I like the relationship of the 3 foster brothers, as well as the instant chemistry between Nicole and Sam. Sam is sweet and understanding of Nicole's priorities, so he is not overly dominating. Once I started reading, I found I wanted to keep reading until the end. Often I will switch from book to book to book, but that wasn't the case in this story.

I've read all the Rice books available for the Nook and she has become my one of my Favorite authors. She gives you a totally hot alpha male and a sweet heroine and really hot love scenes. Loved all her books so far.

Not as good as the others in this series.

The plot was overwhelmingly scary considering all of the horrific events as a result of terrorism.

    more from this reviewer

This exciting and enthralling romantic suspense is a fast-paced entertaining thriller

In San Diego former Navy SEAL Sam Reston of Reston Security is an uncover private sleuth infiltrating the Bucinski gang looking to identify who was smuggling merchandise to the recent tune of $10M from his client. He knows how dangerous the assignment is so he avoids relationships. However, just over two weeks ago his wet dream moved next door and staying away is impossible, but he must for her safety and to keep his mind on the deadly mission.

Unable to resist, in order to get a date with Nicole Pearce, Sam gets Mayor Villarreal to vouch for his character, which His Honor does except warning her about playing poker with the shark. She should say no as she is just starting a new business and worried about her ailing father, but accepts. Neither expected love and his need to keep her safe as they uncover a terrorist plot.

This exciting and enthralling romantic suspense is a fast-paced entertaining thriller that seems any moment as if it will go over the top of the Sierras, but never quite does; a testimony to Lisa Marie Rice's skills. Sam is terrific from the onset as he counts time from how long he first saw her while Nicole proves his perfect mate making his wet dreams of her arid compared with the real thing. The smuggling and terrorism plots add tension, but the charming relationship between the lead couple as each falls in love at the same time Into the Crossfire makes this a fun tale.
