Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Meg Venturi is the quintessential Barbara Michaels Smoke and Mirrors heroine, with a fierce independence and caustic wit barely hiding her romantic soul. Meg's intelligence and grit are put to the test when she returns to her New England home after inheriting half of her grandfather's prestigious jewelry business and finds she must share the operation with a new co-owner, a sinister and enigmatic man called A. L. Riley. But a series of threatening events convinces Meg that somebody wants her out of town. The well-meaning but relentlessly nosy townspeople appear to know more than they're letting on, and a fine collection of garrulous businessmen, surly former classmates and exotic relatives keep Meg on her toes--and constantly looking over her shoulder. An underlying past tragedy involving Meg's father is connected somehow to her present traumas, and Meg must summon all her formidable skills not only to survive, but to get to the root of her deepening problems. Memorable characters and complex mystery make this one of the Michaels's best novels of romantic suspense. Doubleday Book Club alternate. June
School Library Journal
A romantic contemporary mystery that will keep readers guessing until the very end. Upon the death of her grandfather, Meg Venturi finds herself part owner of an antique jewelry store. The local townspeople of Seldon, a small New England town, cannot understand why her grandfather would leave the other half of his store to Riley, a stranger with an unknown past. While the grandfather's estate is being settled, a series of mysterious events occur that lead to revelations of infidelity and murder. Throughout the story, there are tantalizing hints that spur readers on, and the book ends with a totally unexpected twist. The plot development and writing style combine to make this book fascinating for reluctant readers and good readers alike. --Roberta Lisker, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

    One of her better books

This book I enjoy very much. It helps that it was originally published in the 80s or 90s (not sure which) but is more modern than her other novels. The women wear jeans not dresses all the time and it's not as dated as her earlier novels (even though I enjoy those too). I like that the woman in this book is more aggressive and funny and has a good personality. I like the relationship between her and Riley and their unusual romance. The plot is a little convoluted and not very convincing, and really isn't as interesting as watching Riley and Meg argue. This is a good book for light fluffy reading. I keep it around and re-read it in between my more serious literary fiction and nonfiction.
