THE UNICORN CHRONICLES

BOOK I

Into the Land of the Unicorns

As each chime sounds, Cara climbs faster up the steep bell tower. Eleven! She must be on the roof when the next bell tolls. Twelve! With a deep breath, and only half believing she will survive, Cara jumps off the church roof and into Luster, land of the unicorns.

In Luster, Cara meets many wonderful creatures, but the most magnificent of all is Lightfoot, a rebellious young unicorn. Cara's band of friends comes to include a hairy creature named the Dimblethum and the monekey-like Squijim. Together, they set out to reach the Unicorn Queen before the mysterious man who is following them does - to prevent the destruction of all unicorns forever.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Coville's (My Teacher Is an Alien) mild fantasy, the first in the projected Unicorn Chronicles, opens promisingly, with a suspenseful chase scene, but somewhat dissipates its force. A nameless hunter pursues Cara and her grandmother into an empty church, where the grandmother gives Cara her amulet-along with the bewildering instructions to jump from the church tower at the twelfth toll of the bell. The girl lands in Luster, the land of the unicorns, and tries to unravel the mystery surrounding the amulet even as she continues to elude the hunter. Aided by a young unicorn and an assortment of odd creatures, including Dimblethum (``He looked like a bear that had started to become a man but hadn't finished the process'') and Squijum (``a cross between a monkey and a squirrel''), Cara embarks on a number of dangerous adventures. The plot jumps from one episode to the next, and can be confusing. But drama builds with the revelation that the hunter is none other than Cara's father (who long ago abandoned her); no stock villain, he is given plausible motives for his inimical deeds. Cara's loyalties are severely tested, leaving plenty of room for a sequel. Fantasy fans might be content with the headlong pacing, but most will hope that future installments will include more fluid writing and less convoluted plot lines. Ages 8-12. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
In a fantastic world that she quite literally jumps into from a church tower in our world, young Cara finds herself in Luster, the world of the unicorns. Creatures called the Dimblethum and the Squijum aid her in her quest for the Old One-the Unicorn Queen. An elderly red dragon is also instrumental in her success, although she doesn't seem to care for humans much, and Cara must also help her. If Cara is unsuccessful, all the unicorns will be hunted down and killed by hunters from our world. Before Cara can find the Queen she must go through various trials. Exciting and fast-moving, this story will appeal to younger readers of fantasy like Five Children and It, The Amulet or Coville's own Sarah's Unicorn who want a little more detail about fantasy, but who aren't yet ready for Tolkien. Older readers will enjoy identifying the villain. This is a fascinating book. 1995 (orig.

Gr 4-6-When Cara Hunter leaps from a church's bell tower clutching her grandmother's magic amulet, she falls into the land of Luster, home of the Dimblethum, delvers, dragons, the Squijum, and lots of unicorns. Since her grandmother told her to guard the amulet and to deliver an important message to the unicorn Queen, Cara embarks on a journey to her court. She is accompanied by her friends, chief among them Lightfoot, an adolescent unicorn who is having a difficult time with his family. The voyagers are attacked by delvers, Firethroat the Dragon, and Cara's father, who abandoned her when she was three. The loose ends will presumably be the starting point for the next entry in the series. The most striking aspect here is the story within a story. Coville combines all of the known myths about unicorns into one smooth retelling about a woman named Beloved whose life in ways mirrors Cara's own; this tale creates the foundation for the entire novel. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue flows nicely. The plot, particularly the twist involving Cara's father, will be predictable to seasoned fantasy aficionados, but as a whole, the book should find a favored and well-deserved place on most shelves.-Patricia A. Dollisch, DeKalb County Public Library, Decatur, GA

I first read this book when I was in like third grade and it was the best book ever to me back then. Now, I'm in high school and this book still hasn't left me! Every now and then I would always think back to it and wonder what the name was or if I would ever read them again ( I forgot the name/author) and you have NO idea how happy I am that I've found it. It's like the best book ever. I highly recommend this book/series. It's fun and full of fantasy and adventure and will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The book that i just read is called Into the land of the unicorns by Bruce Coville, its a really good book. I read it every night without stopping. It is a book about a girl named Cara in the age of 13 or 14, that is walking from the library with her grandmother to another store.   Cara realizes a man is following her. She asks her Grandmother what he is doing. Her grandma is worried and she won’t tell Cara. They run to an old church when someone walks in. They duck down below the seats, while she hunter is looking for them. They dash up to a door leading to the top of a building. Her Grandma gives her a special locket and with the hunter close behind her grandma tells her she will ring the church bell 12 times. She has to jump off the tower on the 12th chime and say some magical words. Worried, she does as her grandma says and ends up in another world.  Cara meets some new friends including and elf, and squirrel like monkey, and a unicorn. She is told to bring the locket back to the old one where it came from. Cara is worried where her grandmother is and if the hunter is behind. They run to the castle and on the long journey they meet more friends like a dragon and another  elf. Read the book to find out if she makes it to the castle or the hunter comes!

Coville steps out of the ordinary in the trilogy about an alternate world were all magical things have hidden from human reality. It has taken Bruce far too long to write these books but we have waited, patiently, to follow the story. I read "Into the Land of Unicorns" to my daughters, as children. They are now in thier 20's. It caught our hearts and imaginations. I am so glad that they rereleased the earlier books for new readers to enjoy. These books have a following. If you haven't experienced them, gift the entire set to a child and share in the reading for I enjoyed them just as much as my daughters.

This series is one of the best fantasy series I have ever read since Narnia! This book will keep the reader on their seats throughout the whole book! The begining of this book is sure to grab the attention of the reader and keep it that way until the very end. This is one of the most interesting series I have ever read. I don't know how the author did it but when I was reading this book I went to the world of Luster with Cara and met all of the Unicorns, The dimblethumb ...etc. I think this book is a great book for kids of all ages - especially girls. The books get darker as you go along and by the forth book things are a bit dark but I suggest this series to any who love Narnia and Unicorns...

It's a book I remember well from my childhood and it was also used by a summer tutor of mine to help me learn to read (I was a horrible reader and I'm still slightly shaky sometimes). The story kept me hooked and I'm glad to find out there are more books to the series which I plan to buy soon. I hope to use these books to possibly help teach my own children (if I ever have any) to read as well. It is definitely a book you're not going to forget even years later down the road.

This book is such a great book! At the end of each chapter there is a great spine chilling cliff hanger! I'm now hooked on this great series!
I would recommend this to kids between fourth through sixth grade for an easy read and/or a book talk!
Happy reading for all!!!
