Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
Book Two of Avi's Beyond The Western Sea is a sprawling saga that takes place over a six-week period in 1851. Starting in England and ending in America, the first thirty days occur largely on board a ship heading from one country to the other. The extensive cast of characters includes: fifteen-year-old Maura and her twelve-year-old brother Patrick (traveling to their father in Massachusetts); Laurence, a secretly wealthy stowaway befriended by Patrick; Bridy, a sweet eight-year-old entrusted to Maura's care when her entire family dies of ship fever; and Mr. Drabble, an aspiring actor who has fallen in unrequited love with Maura. Meanwhile, in America, there is a second cast of characters, among them Maura and Patrick's ailing father; his friend, Nathaniel; Jeb, an impoverished youth whose mother is ill from working long hours in the cotton factory; and Jeremiah Jenkins, a hate-filled man with a dangerous agenda against Irish immigrants. The story offers a storm at sea; a deadly fire; betrayals and changes of heart; unexpected alliances and friendships; secrets, close calls, and numerous twists and turns. There is anger, love, tragedy and tenderness aplenty. The down side is, with so many characters and plots to keep track of—not to mention the sometimes difficult language ("... grieved to be taken as deserving of his own doleful estimation")—this is a challenging read to say the least... especially if one has not read the prequel, The Escape from Home. Despite its considerable merit, this book can only be recommended with reservation. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
