Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Set against the backdrop of the 1871 Chicago fire, this glimpse by Camden (The Rose of Winslow Street) into the past is a sweet, emotion-filled romance to warm the heart and touch the soul. As the sole proprietor of the watchmaking and stewardship enterprise begun by her father, Mollie Knox must not only manage the business end of the exclusive manufacturing venture, but also care for the company’s employees, most of whom are disabled Civil War veterans. In the wake of the blaze, Mollie must team with Zack Kazmarek—a Polish dockworker-turned-lawyer who has intimidated her for years—to find a way to save herself, her adopted family, and her business. When a figure from Mollie’s past appears, difficulties arise all around. While a light read, the cast of characters is varied and lovingly detailed, colorful and bursting with life. Subtle references to faith are unevenly woven throughout the simple story, and some of them are too subtle. Cleverly disguised life lessons balance the uncomplicated storytelling. Very well-written historical fiction. Just enough passion, with a subtle Christian base. Loved the strong characters, flaws and all. First novel I've read based on the Chicago fire, and the author painted such a vivid picture I could feel the flames closing in.

THIS WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK. EXCITING TO FEEL AS IF I WAS REALLY THERE DURING THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE. IT TOOK FAITH AND DETERMINATION TO SURVIVE THE FIRE AND THE EVENTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES THAT FOLLOWED. I GAINED RESPECT FOR REAL PEOPLE WHO OVERCAME THE HARDSHIPS CAUSED BY THIS TRUE CHAPTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY.

It is more then romance, it is living through the great Chicago fire. It is feeling the heat, struggling to breath with the smoke over powering everything. And it is the resilience of the people to pick themselves up and keep living. Rebuilding and trusting in God. I felt as though I was there with the people. Very compelling.

I loved this book the most. It was the best written book so far for a historical fiction book. I love the fact that his is about history of event that happen in Chicago. It has some romance but not whole lot in it. This book is about the Chicago fire. It is cool that it tell you about the people and how people dealt with the fire. I really talks about the aftermath of the great Chicago fire. It detail the what happens to some of the buildings and what the neighbors did for the city and new change came about. If you really like history or interest in history of the US then this book is for you. Remember this book has some fiction but it still go learning tool to learn about American history in some ways.

This book gives an insiders view of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and what it took to rebuild lives, businesses, and loves from the rubble and ashes left behind. I really liked the characters in this book. Mollie Knox is a independent, strong, and compassionate women determined to keep her father's watch shop open, if for nothing else she has to provide her employees, mostly Civil War veterans with work and stability. Zack Kazmarek is a influential Polish man who has worked his way up from unloading ships at the docks to being the most feared lawyer in all of Chicago. His secret admiration for Mollie has been growing for nearly three years, he's determined to make her his but it seems like every time things are about to work out as planned something comes and tears them apart. I really enjoyed the descriptiveness of this book. I felt the excitement of Chicago before the fire, the desperation after the fire, and above all a sense of hope rekindled. Things being rebuilt, futures restored, loves revealed, and lessons learned. I thought the romance moved a little too quickly to feel real but despite that fact I still loved the characters. They did seem real. I would probably give this book more like a 4.5 star but a 5 star review is a little steep in my opinion. I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.

Mollie Knox, owner of the 57th Illinois Watch Company, employs veterans who served with her father in the 57th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. These veterans are talented artisans who craft high-end watches, but to Mollie, they are family. Mollie's contract with Hartman's, a fine department store, affords her a measure of financial security until Zack Kazmarek, Hartman's handsome, yet intimidating attorney, issues an ultimatum that Mollie must sell her business to Hartman or lose her contract. Unexpectedly, the Great Chicago Fire ravages the city, destroying tangible property and intangible dreams. When famed Colonel Lowe, leader of the 57th Illinois Infantry, helps Mollies rebuild, Mollie is torn between the kind, stable Colonel Lowe and the passionate, unstable Zack Kazmarek. Into the Whirlwind by Elizabeth Camden is a stand-alone novel set in nineteenth-century Chicago. Admittedly, I don't know many details regarding the terrible tragedy of the Great Chicago Fire and Chicago's period of rebuilding; however, Camden's depictions seemed authentic and realistic. Into the Whirlwind has a solid plot that quickly hooked my attention and carried it through to the end of the novel.  I found it refreshing that the romance elements of the story kept me guessing who Mollie was going to end up with. I recommend this book to lovers of historical romances. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. This story was inspiring. Seeing a woman struggle to maintain her business and support of her employees during and after the great Chicago fire was this Elizabeth Camden storyline. The struggles to live and rebuild after the fire, the class differences. The love it took her awhile to recognize, this was a great book.

Chicago's late 1800s history abounds in this novel by Elizabeth Camden! I learned things about the Great Chicago Fire that I had never imagined. You will feel the desperation of Mollie to care for the men from the Civil War company with whom her father served. You will also feel how attorney, Zack, is torn between his loyalty to his mentor and employer and his love for Mollie. I was not certain how the book would end but was happy with the conclusion! I highly recommend Into The Whirlwind to anyone who likes historical fiction. I won Into The Whirlwind from a Kate Beslin giveaway!

I love a well-written historical fiction that draws you into the sights, sounds and smells of the moment, and this one was excellent. The unbelievable hardships borne by those caught up in this disaster and its aftermath kept me thinking, "what if?" Would ANY American today be able to survive such an unexpected and earth-shattering crisis? Glad to have "lived" vicariously through this fabulous novel; and extremely grateful that I didn't truly have to live it.
