School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Based on the Discovery Channel's Animal Planet series, these books present a refreshing approach to high-interest-level books on animals and their habitats. Fast paced and colloquial, the narratives show sensitivity to the animals discussed as well as to human intrusion on their habitats. The books are labeled "The Jeff Corwin Experience" and present him as "host" rather than author. In Borneo, he tracks elephants, meets orangutans up close, and forms a relationship with a leech. In Panama, he explores the jungles near Panama City and discovers beauty in the coils of a snake, helps out a tamarind [sic], and introduces a rare bat eating a smoky frog. In Madagascar, he marvels at chameleons, tenrecs, and lemurs while sadly lamenting the loss of habitat with the current policy of deforestation. Because these books will hook reluctant readers so well, it is a shame that the illustrations, mostly in a television-screen format, are so poorly reproduced. Dark, murky, distant, and small, they do not capture the beauty and marvel that the words convey. This is a rare opportunity to show children how full of magic the various inhabitants of our world can be, and exciting illustrations would have made these works complete.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
