About the Author

Dr. Catherine Otto is currently the J. Ward Kennedy-Hamilton Endowed Chair in Cardiology and Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal Heart, published by the BMJ and the British Cardiovascular Society. Formerly head of the fellowship program at the University of Washington she is a highly prolific author with solid experience in teaching echocardiography skills and applications.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference on the use of transesophageal echocardiography for common cardiac diseases and their associated procedures.
Audience: The audience includes those with advanced medical training or who are in the process of training, such as cardiology fellows, cardiac anesthesia fellows, practicing cardiologists, or cardiac anesthesiologists.
Features: The organization of the book is excellent. Each chapter covers a specific disease entity, surgical intervention, or procedure and uses case format, with TEE images accompanied by relevant anatomic dissections, artist renderings, or fluoroscopic imaging to further orient readers. At the end of each case, a brief author commentary covers the key points. The coauthors of the book have done a wonderful job covering the many advances in the field of cardiology that have occurred since the first edition was published. Topics such as transcatheter valve therapies, transcatheter device closures, mechanical circulatory support, and 3D imaging during cardiac surgery are covered in great detail, making the second edition up to date and incredibly relevant.
Assessment: This atlas does a great job of covering intraoperative and interventional transesophageal echocardiography. It would be an ideal reference for before or after a procedure. While the audience is narrow, that is by intention: to focus on a very specific aspect of cardiac imaging and do it well. This latest update, accounting for advances in the field of cardiology over the last 10 years, is an essential title for cardiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists who perform transesophageal studies.
