Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The large masses of land on planet earth are called continents. Among these are North America, South America, and Africa. On each of these continents is a myriad of landforms, or different shapes of land, such as peninsulas, islands, and mountains. Landforms provide diversity in our planet so that everywhere does not look the same, but each different landform also provides a greater purpose. Young readers are encouraged to identify different landforms in their own geographical area. The author discusses mountains, rivers and lakes, valleys and plains, as well as deserts. All habitats are included with actual photos, as well as diagrams and close-up photos of plant and animal life inhabiting each ecosystem. At the end of the text there is a quick self-quiz that lets the reader see how much he or she has learned about landforms. Readers are encouraged to express their creativity by photographing and then painting a landscape showing the landforms near their home. The inclusion of multicultural faces makes it universally appealing. Words in bold print are included in a glossary at the end of the text, which also includes an index. The thirty-two-page length makes it a good resource for elementary students, as well as a welcome addition to science classrooms. This series, ‘Looking at Earth,' includes titles about earth and the sun, oceans, volcanoes, and this title about landforms. Reviewer: Joyce Rice
