Given the sheer volume of material recorded under Shaw's name during this time period, the producers of this compilation made excellent choices. In addition to the leader's always satisfying solo work, you'll want to listen for the piano of Johnny Guarnieri, a skilled improviser who may be heard rocking the harpsichord as a member of Shaw's Gramercy Five on "Summit Ridge Drive."
