Overview

Best of Jazz presents a survey of swing sides cut between September 1937 and January 1942 by clarinetist and bandleader Artie Shaw. Given the sheer volume of material recorded under Shaw's name during this time period, the producers of this compilation made excellent choices. In addition to the leader's always satisfying solo work, you'll want to listen for the piano of Johnny Guarnieri, a skilled improviser who may be heard rocking the harpsichord as a member of Shaw's Gramercy Five on "Summit Ridge Drive." Featured vocalists are Leo "Scat" Watson ("Shoot the Likker to Me, John Boy"), Billie Holiday ("Any Old Time"), and trumpeter Hot Lips Page ("St. James Infirmary"). Altogether a dependable and rewarding choice for those who are dazzled by the many dozens of worthwhile compilations that comprise Shaw's digital discography.
