Overview

Bronchoscopy is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures and also defines the procedural practice of chest physicians and surgeons. In most training programs, however, there is little structured education and trainees learn by watching and doing. This book is intended as a roadmap for any physician looking to master or improve skills in this important area. It outlines what the authors, who are all experts in the field, think a standard approach to common procedures should be and covers everything from anatomy and equipment care to how to set up a bronchoscopy unit. Step- by-step descriptions and abundant illustrations provide the reader with detailed instructions for performing diagnostic procedures such as bronchial washing and lavage, lung biopsy, and transbronchial needle aspiration. This book also discusses bronchoscopy in the ICU and lung transplant patients. Advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy and basic therapeutic techniques are reviewed in the final two chapters.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Joel C Seidman, MD (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: While this comprehensive introduction to bronchoscopy resembles many books, both current and older, that cover the same spectrum of diagnostic and interventional clinical pulmonology, this one provides updates on newer fiber optic instruments and ultrasonic technologies. As such, it is a suitable resource for beginners, though clearly not a substitute for experience, but it is not an exceptional reference for those already well-educated in the area.
Purpose: "This is intended as an authoritative reference for quick, clear descriptions of the basis of performance of diagnostic and therapeutic fiber optic bronchoscopy. "
Audience: The handling of the topic makes it primarily a book for those learning the technique of fiber optic bronchoscopy, typically during fellowship training in pulmonology or pulmonology and critical care medicine.
Features: "The book focuses on all areas of fiber optic bronchoscopy, but diagrams are limited and there is less than a satisfactory number and variety of endobronchial pathologies essential for students, but the bibliographies are extensive and pertinent. "
Assessment: I would recommend the book almost exclusively to those training in clinical pulmonology or closely allied subspecialty disciplines, but I, personally, would not consider it a very practical resource.
