Introduction to Dizzy Gillespie: His Best Recordings 1937-1947

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
Here we find trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie leading his orchestra from 1937 through 1947. At various times during this period his band included Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, James Moody -- and that's just the saxophone section! This material chronicles Dizzy as champion of the emerging bebop revolution while holding together a first-rate big band as that style began its eminent decline. A few of the classic Gillespie compositions included are "Groovin' High," "Dizzy Atmosphere," "Salt Peanuts," and "Night in Tunisia." This is an excellent compilation from The Best of Jazz highlighting this period of Dizzy's career.
