About the Author

Patrice L. Spath, MA, RHIT, is a health information management professional with broad experience in healthcare quality and safety improvement. She is president of Brown-Spath & Associates, a healthcare publishing and training company in Forest Grove, Oregon, and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she teaches online graduate-level courses in patient safety. She also teaches quality management and patient safety in the undergraduate and graduate health administration programs at Pacific University in Oregon, and she is a guest lecturer on patient safety in the healthcare simulation master’s program at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Over the past 35 years, she has presented more than 400 educational programs and authored numerous books and journal articles on healthcare quality management and patient safety topics.

Description: This is the third edition of an overview of the field of quality management basics: measurement, assessment, and improvement, with an emphasis on current regulatory policy initiatives pertaining to patient-centric care, positive patient outcomes, and value-based reimbursement. This edition contains an entire chapter on the latest trend of population management and includes more case study exemplars, more website references, and margins with definitions of key terms. There are ample illustrations (e.g. algorithms, bulleted lists, common forms, etc.). The two previous editions were published in 2009 and 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to review the basic principles of healthcare quality management and provide updated information on the most current practices in the field. This is a well-written book on the fundamentals of healthcare quality management that also provides current updates on the external forces that continually shape the practice of healthcare quality management, which makes the book relevant and useful. It does indeed meet the objectives by providing a comprehensive overview of quality management with the newest information in the field.
Audience: This is a well-written student textbook and practitioner guide on the basic information and processes in the field of healthcare quality management. From this perspective it meets the audience's needs. The author has extensive experience in this field as the president of her own healthcare publishing and training company as a teacher at three university settings. She is also a certified registered health information technician and serves as a consulting editor for the publication, Hospital Peer Review.
Features: This well-organized book begins with the basic quality healthcare principles, the measurement tools, and the processes. The concluding chapter explains the quality management infrastructure by which it conducts its business, which helps readers understand how the functions of quality management fit into the organization and what is expected at every departmental level. The book uses many important structural elements such as bulleted lists, algorithms, common forms used, and depictions of the measurement tools, which help make the topic easier to understand. The book also contains a very helpful glossary of terms.
Assessment: This is an excellent book on the principles and processes of healthcare quality management. As an educator, I would use this type of book for an introductory course and recommend it to colleagues as a quick reference. The difference between this and the previous edition is the addition of the chapter on the management of population healthcare. This chapter covers new quality management policy regulations, new improvement models, and new strategies to manage improved population health initiatives. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, through its Healthy People 2020 initiative, is trying to change the healthcare focus from an individual-based to a population-based care management system, with an added emphasis on preventive healthcare. This chapter explains the rationale of these important initiatives.
