This text encourages students to take more active roles as media consumers and gives them a deeper understanding of the role that the media play in both shaping and reflecting culture. Through this cultural perspective, students learn that audience members are as much a part of the mass communication process as are the media producers, technologies, and industries. This was the first university-level text to make media literacy central to its approach.
Building on this tested emphasis, the updated fifth edition features a complete updating of industry statistics throughout, numerous new examples from the ongoing Iraq war, Virginia Tech shooting, the Don Imus controversy, and much more!
Part One: Laying the Groundwork1. Mass Communication, Culture, and Media Literacy

I ordered two textbooks for my daughter. They were processed promptly, and arrived earlier than promised. Both books were in excellent condition. One seems to be brand new, and was half the bookstore's used copy price! Although all of this seller's responses to my emails were automated, and not personalized, they were very prompt in responding. The tracking numbers they provided did not work - however BN cofirmed that USPS "recycles" their tracking numbers, so this was a USPS issue and not the seller. I would definitely buy from this seller again. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
