Overview

Introduction to Neuropsychopharmacology expands on the molecular and cellular foundations of the classic Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, Eighth Edition (Cooper, Bloom, and Roth) by now including the behavioral methods used to study psychoactive drugs in experimental animals and in humans. Authored by four founders of modern neuroscience, this concise and comprehensive text covers the current series of medications used to treat diseases of the brain and nervous system—both psychiatric and neurologic—as well as legal and illegal recreational drugs and the neuroscientific information that explains how these medications act on the brain from the molecular to the clinical level. The text ranges from drugs that affect the mood and behavior to hypnotics, narcotics, anticonvulsants, and analgesics.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a marvelous new book (which is actually a version of the classic, The Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, 8th edition, Cooper, Bloom and Roth (Oxford University Press, 2003)) covering "the principles by which the effects of drugs on behaviors, as well as on cells and circuits, are determined." Written and edited by giants in neuroscience, this book is a terrific addition to the medical literature.
Purpose: After the decision not to revise the eighth edition of Cooper, Bloom and Roth, the editors had a change of heart, but decided to relinquish "a lot of the academic minutiae" and produce this introductory textbook that focuses on "the study of drugs that affect the cells and circuits of the brain, and the brain's behavioral, emotional, and cognitive operations.
Audience: The targeted audience includes medical students as well as graduate students, house officers, and fellows.
Features: Topics covered include the cellular and molecular foundations, principles and methods, receptors, amino acid neurotransmitters, acetylcholine, catecholamines, serotonin, histamine, neuropeptides, purinergic pharmacology, and other interneuronal signals. In addition, the principles of CNS drug development for neurological and psychiatric disorders are covered. Clinically useful chapters cover such topics as antidepressants, antipsychotics, cognitive disorders, movement disorders, pain, epilepsy, recreational psychoactive drugs, psychostimulants, opiates, psychedelics, cannabis, alcohol, and nicotine.
Assessment: This informative and readable new introductory textbook of neuropsychopharmacology should be required reading for any medical student, graduate student, or physician interested understanding neuroscience. It is an outstanding learning tool.
