Featuring all the latest imaging modalities—including ultrasound, MR, and PET/CT—this Second Edition text provides a solid understanding of sectional anatomy and its applications in clinical imaging. By interpreting and comparing images of different patients, you learn to distinguish normal anatomic variations from variations that indicate disease or injury.

Introduction to Sectional Anatomy, Second Edition begins with a chapter that defines key terminology and concepts. The remaining chapters are dedicated to individual body regions. Each one begins with an overview to help you understand the chapter's sectional images. You learn to interpret a series of patient CT and MR images shown in sequence through multiple planes. Next, clinical cases centered on CT, MR, ultrasound, and PET/CT images demonstrate how to apply your knowledge of sectional anatomy for patient exams.

Features That Help You Master Sectional Anatomy—

  • New layout and design make it easier to compare images from several patients.
  • New clinical cases show you how knowledge of sectional anatomy is applied in practice.
  • Chapter objectives set forth the skills and knowledge you'll have upon successful completion of the chapter.
  • Clinical application questions at the end of each chapter test your ability to apply your sectional anatomy knowledge.

Gain a solid foundation for sectional anatomy imaging with this up-to-date and thoroughly comprehensive resource. And set your sight on success from the very start.

Because cross-sectional anatomy is at the very foundation of successful imaging, this new learning resource is rich in features making it easier for readers to learn, identify, and recall anatomic structures in cross-section. All body part chapters include an anatomical overview that reviews the relationship between the structures of that region. Sectional anatomy is described through the use of labeled computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) images. The three-way structure presentation--anatomical scanograms; patient scans (MRs and/or CTs); and adjacent correlating line drawings--allows readers to identify anatomy on actual images versus photographs of cadaver specimens. Chapter objectives help readers clarify goals and streamline review. Key terms are emphasized in bold type and explained with clear, in-depth definitions. Pathology case studies illustrate the clinical significance of sectional images. End-of-chapter review questions, with answers in separate appendices, test the reader's understanding. Only clinically significant anatomy is covered, so readers aren't overwhelmed with unnecessary material.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cris A. Zimmermann, RT (R)(Froedtert Hospital)
Description: This is a resource for any technologist or radiologist or clinician who needs to look at cross-sectional images. This second edition is an improvement on an already fantastic tool used in teaching cross-sectional imaging.
Purpose: The purpose is to allow readers the ability to view sectional images of several patients and compare them. Using CT, MRI 3D, and PET, readers will learn about the relationships of anatomical structures in sectional images. The book is necessary as an increasing number of images ordered these days are those done in CT/PET and MRI. The author once again comes through with an indispensable tool.
Audience: The primary audience is student radiographers and radiographers in the field of CT/MRI. It could certainly shed light on the number of sectional images seen in a radiology department for clinicians and radiology residents as well.
Features: Starting with an anatomical review, the book continues with in-depth discussions about sectional images. The thorough paragraphs adjacent to each sectional image point out some of the discrete as well as subtle changes from on slice to the next. The line drawings that accompany each image help to pinpoint the exact location of certain structures.
Assessment: As an instructor for a school of radiologic technology, I found this book a most comprehensive look at the field of cross-sectional images. The companion workbook will be enjoyed by all students and I appreciated the CD with test bank and images annotated and unannotated. The second edition cleans up some typographical errors and provides more in-depth information about pathology, as well as the much needed addition of PET and 3D images. The introduction chapter provides information about Houndsfield units, US and T1 versus T2 imaging in MRI. It is the best book to land on my desk on cross-sectional anatomy.
A textbook for a course introducing students of radiology to anatomy as revealed in sectional images; readers are expected to have completed one or two semesters of standard anatomy and physiology. Considering only those structures that are clinically significant, Madden (allied health, Fort Hays State U.) focuses on the relationship between them. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (

Received book in a timely manner as I was told. It was so new, it looked like it was never opened.
