Delivering a comprehensive overview of the profession, Zastrow's bestselling Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare: Empowering People, 10e looks at contemporary society with a realistic view of social problems. By presenting positive strategies in the context of the core values, ethics, skills, and knowledge base of today's professional social worker, Zastrow encourages readers to think about new and realistic ways to solve problems and empower clients. Throughout the book, practical social problems cases, exhibits, and tables help the reader apply chapter concepts to real-world situations, as well as compare and contrast the issues. Completely up to date, the Tenth Edition includes new coverage of human rights, the housing crisis and recession, President Obama's social welfare agenda, and much more.
"We believe as a department that this is the best introductory book on the market. Our students love the book and we anticipate using it for years to come."
"This text provides an in depth overview of social work as a profession, its relationship to social welfare issues in society and the role of social work and the social worker to assess and intervene with individuals, families, groups and organizations."
"It is one of the best texts I have reviewed for thoroughly covering each of the topics that social work and human service majors may encounter. Its ease of readability and its sensitivity to a strengths perspective encourage students to approach these subjects by thinking critically and exploring their personal experiences and opinions with the information presented."

Extremely biased look at our culture which only perpetuates racism and separation in our society. Stating every problem of each race is caused by white people is completely unfounded and absurd and only hurts our society. For an unbiased look into race I recommend reading an intellectually stimulating book called "Race Matters" by Cornel West however unfortunately I cannot recommend another social work book as this is the only one at this level I have read. It gives a decent look at social work as a whole, however I found his statements and information offensive and unfounded. For example he states (not in exact words) our history books don't really talk about African Americans. Again, I would have to disagree with that statement. I cannot recommend this book to college students/professors as I believe it only perpetuates separation in society.
