Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This is the sixth edition of an overview of today's healthcare system as well as more than 75 healthcare careers. It updates the previous edition of 2008, with 21 completely rewritten chapters and four revised chapters to reflect current practice information.
Purpose: This is an update on the current status of healthcare and the myriad of professions required to serve patients. Given the complexity of modern medicine and the vast number of career options, this book meets its objectives.
Audience: It is written primarily for anyone interested in serving patients in a healthcare setting.
Features: The book is divided into two parts: the U.S. healthcare system and healthcare professions involving patient care. Part one discusses insurance reimbursement, aging population challenges, healthcare reform, and healthcare planning. The second part discusses each profession, including employment outlook and opportunities, work description, salaries, work environment, educational/legal requirements (including licensure), as well as other qualifications and advancement opportunities.
Assessment: This excellent, easy to read book is highly recommended for high school and college students who are interested in a healthcare career serving patients. It would also be an excellent reference in any library.
