Editorial Reviews

Sally Northam
This is a seventh edition of an introductory medical-surgical nursing text. Since the 1995 edition, the editors have integrated pharmacology, nursing guidelines, and clinical procedures, and have expanded on psychobiologic disorders and the nursing process. There is also revised content on nursing management, physical assessment, pathophysiology, and critical thinking. The purpose is to provide readers with the practical knowledge and skills needed to manage the nursing care of clients in today's changing healthcare environment. This rapidly changing environment makes new editions necessary in order to deliver accurate information. The goal of producing an updated text is worthy, but the limited incorporation of current research undermines the value of this book. The audience is identified only as nurses. The level of information is basic and seems most suited to LVN/LPN education. The editors are nurse-educators with masters degrees. Contributions by doctoral prepared nurse-educators on research-based practice would strengthen the text. This text covers common health problems organized by body systems. Trends in healthcare, physical assessment, culturally competent care, and legal and ethical issues are also briefly overviewed. Helpful features such as drug tables, nursing care plans, and nursing guidelines are included, but sufficient primary resources and integration of research are lacking. Sufficient depth of material on caring for culturally diverse individuals and the elderly is missing as well. This text provides a broad overview and incorporates important trends in healthcare, such as critical pathways. However, the insufficient depth and lack of incorporation of research tosupport practice guidelines undermine the value of this text.
Booknews
A text on adult disorders treated medically and surgically, with units on nursing roles, development, psychosocial aspects of nursing, psychobiologic disorders, and common medical-surgical problems. Pedagogical features include discussion of general nutritional, pharmacologic, and gerontologic considerations, chapter learning objectives, summaries of key concepts, critical thinking exercises, and a glossary. This seventh edition integrates more material on pharmacology, expands discussion of psychobiologic disorders, and adds boxes on nursing guidelines and clinical procedures. Also new to this edition are community and Internet resources. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
