The Invasion [NOOK Book]

Overview

They came in their thousands. We fought them as one. It started with a storm that brought with it a strange green rain. Where it fell, everything withered and died. The residents of remote outposts in Maritime Canada escaped the worst of the early damage, but that was a blessing in disguise, for they were left to watch as first North America, then the world, was subsumed in the carpet of green.

    I Also Recommend:

    Campfire storytelling at its finest

Pull up a stump by the fire, open the bottle, and listen as Meikle spins a great science-fiction pulp yarn. The end of the world comes not with a whimper but with a bang. But these are characters you're happy to live and die with. Worth the price of admission. Scott Nicholson

    Green snow that burns? Check.
Aggressive vegetation that spawns pincered nasties? Check.
    Un-coordinated, terrified human response? Check.
Implacable malevolence of extraterrestrial origin? Check.
Few lucky survivors who must use all their wits and even more luck to survive past the third chapter?

Yup - all here, all the ingredients of a classic adventure. It's even better than the list foretells though - because you can throw in some character study (Why me?! and I always dreamt of this, but now I'm not so sure...), some eerie and remote settings, and a belter of a plan to save the world that involves, well... I shan't spoil it, but let's just say it's as extreme a medicine as the symptoms.

This is a cracking read that races by.

    The aliens are coming...

...the aliens are coming! Think of those old 50s scifi horror flicks, War of the Worlds, and even Independence Day, and you get some of what makes up this first novel by William Meikle. Green ashy snow plagues most of the planet, killing off plant and animal life, only to breed bigger and haves alien life forms...and survivors struggle to find a way to fight back. They eventually do, thanks to help from a professor, Canadian scientist, and a survivalist...albeit a somewhat plausible solution. Some formatting mistakes and typos made for minor distractions, but I'd still read more of Meikle's subsequent novels.

Just when you think you have it figured out, Meikle tacks in directions that keep you on edge. Great ride, if you liked Stephen King's 'The Mist', you'll love this. I especially liked the innovative take on how an alien invasion would occur - definitely keeps you on your toes!
