Overview

Profit from Your Unique Advantages as a Small Investor--Speed and Flexibility!

“The book you are holding is, hands-down, one of the most original and insightful books I have ever read when it comes to teaching you, the individual investor, not only why you have the ability to beat the Whales of Wall Street, but also how you can do it.”

--from the foreword by James J. Cramer, CNBC’s Mad Money and TheStreet.com

“Even investors who concentrate on fundamentals can benefit from Jim DePorre’s Shark approach to investing. At the very least they will know why, for a time, they can get the facts right but the stock wrong.”

--Herb Greenberg, senior columnist, MarketWatch.com

“There are very few traders who have RevShark’s intuitive feel for the market. I especially appreciate Rev’s unique ability to recognize and utilize the distinct advantages of being a smaller, individual investor versus the less agile large institutions.”

--Barry Ritholtz, Chief Investment Officer, Ritholtz Capital Partners

As an individual investor, you can swim circles around the “whales” of Wall Street…by investing like a shark! In this book, James “RevShark” DePorre reveals how to maximize your powerful and unique advantages as a small investor: speed and flexibility. You’ll develop a completely new way of looking at the stock market, learn when to attack, how to move aggressively, how to stay flexible…and when to swim away in the face of danger. You’ll learn why “buy and hold” is today’s riskiest strategy…and exactly what to do instead. In short, you’ll learn the same disciplined investment techniques that helped DePorre build a tiny nest egg into a huge fortune and transformed his life.

If you read TheStreet.com, RealMoney.com, or SharkInvesting.com, you already know DePorre and his inspiring personal story of how he lost his hearing, career, and marriage…turned to online investing out of desperation…and succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Now, in this fast-paced, insightful, and entertaining book, DePorre shows how you can do it, too.

How to invest like a shark…

  • Stay in motion, trolling for your “next meal”
Stalk your prey patiently, relentlessly, and without emotion
  • Move fast when there’s blood in the water
    Know when to strike
  • Know when to swim away
    Sell when you sense danger
  • Feed on the frenzied crowd
Profit from others’ fear, despair, stupidity, and greed
  • Use all your unique advantages and strengths
Leverage small caps, technical analysis, and the tremendous power of cash
  • Invest with the shark’s attitude
Be active, adaptive--and control your own destiny

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

DePorre, noted stock market investor and writer for TheStreet.com and RealMoney.com, offers advice to small investors. The key to maximizing assets, he says, is shark investing-protecting capital while aggressively pursuing profits. Small investors' quickness and flexibility is a powerful advantage that they should exploit. But most small investors are passive, DePorre claims, holding investments for long-term gains, although this conventional investment wisdom results in only mediocre returns and carries the risk of greater loss. Maintaining the shark analogy, he tackles topics such as the myths of Wall Street, understanding market dynamics, portfolio management and how to put everything together, offering cogent, practical advice. Graphs and charts illustrate key points, in addition to a useful glossary. But the shark theme gets old quickly and makes otherwise sound advice appear gimmicky. However, for first-timers planning to enter the market or those hoping to improve their results, DePorre's advice will be a welcome guide. (Nov.)

He is President of both Shark Asset Management, Inc., and Shark Investing, Inc., and has been a featured writer for Jim Cramer’s TheStreet.com and RealMoney.com since 2001. A pioneer in educating investors online, DePorre joined Herb Greenberg in 1995 to found AOL’s The Shark Attack trading site, which quickly became a premier destination for serious traders. In 1999, he founded Shark Investing, which has evolved from its chat room roots into a full-service educational and financial content Web site.

Read an Excerpt

Preface Preface

Becoming totally deaf and losing my career and almost everything I owned is the best thing that ever happened to me. If these things hadn't occurred, I would never have discovered the amazing financial opportunities that the stock market holds for small, individual investors who approach investing in the right way.

What felt like a huge personal disaster from which I would never recover ultimately led me to develop an approach to the stock market that I call Shark Investing. Shark Investing seeks to protect capital while aggressively pursuing profits. It takes advantage of the quickness and great flexibility that small investors possess. Shark Investing helped me turn a small sum into many millions, and I'm confident that you can do the same.

This book tells you why Shark Investing is a superior approach to the market and sets forth the steps you can take to seize control of your investing fate. After you read this book, you will never look at the stock market in the same way again.

    Straight Talk

For those of you unfamiliar with 'RevShark' James DePorre, this book will serve as a personal handshake with the man, his methods and his background. The book underscores what many of us who trade for a living have learned: the tools for successful trading are at our disposal but you have to think independent of the herd. One of the key points the book makes is that we have, as active investors, the ability to react quickly to market conditions or stock action. I became aware of this philosophy when I joined RevShark's 'Supertraders' chat room back in 1999 (although the name has changed to SharkInvesting, many members have been in that room with me since its 1999 inception). It was there that I became a student of 'Rev's' methods. Since that time I have watched my portfolio grow significantly. This book is a great read and a blueprint for anyone looking to gain an edge in the world of investing/trading

    Inspiring/Highly Educational and Motivational

As someone who shared with the obviously disgruntled reviewer, the same investment site, I would like to share some of my thoughts. **I am still a member of the site though he no longer is** I came to know Rev through his column over at TheStreet.Com. He is not your average perma bull, perma bear, who stays planted in one camp. He has an amazing track record for not just picking stocks, but being able to sense, and give heads up in advance, when the markets feel like it is coming towards a top or bottom. When Rev announced that he was starting his own site, Shark Investing, I was right there signing up. He has helped give me the tools to become a much better trader, that the $80/monthly fee, is nominal compared to the money I now earn trading. Rev put together an amazing team of talent and brains that meet with his subscribers in a live chat forum called The Lagoon. In this forum, an extremely informative, energetic group meets daily to discuss the market. Not only is Rev's panel phenomenal, so are the subscribers themselves. Many hold degrees in finance, investment banking and are entrepreneurs. Rev, himself, chats with us on a very regular basis. The site has both a professional and family oriented feel. There is no pump and dump going on as in other chat forums. Stocks are researched on a daily basis. Hundreds of charts are scanned to come up with a group of stocks that WE are encouraged to research ourselves before buying. We are also encouraged to take profits when we can. I have learned, in the Lagoon, how to read charts and identify chart patterns that enhance my trading ability. In everyday life, there are those who are going to take the tools given to us and embrace them and others who are not going to adhere and walk away feeling bitter. I am going to refer to one case in point. Stock ABC was picked. It owned a large stake in company XYZ that was coming public. The story behind both ABC and XYZ was good. We all bought ABC with the belief that when the IPO of XYZ occurred, ABC would benefit. When that did not seem to be the case, and we could tell based on a failing chart pattern, the panel that moderates the Lagoon, advised us to cut the stock. Some did, others did not. Unfortunately, one of the subscribers who did not cut when advised, held on only to see greater losses. Caveat Emptor. Bitter, that person left the Lagoon. It saddens me that this person chose to use Rev Shark's book launch as his way of enacting his personal vendetta. Sometimes in life, one must know how to cut one's losses 'if that is how one feels' and plain and simply move on. As for myself, I have made my share of mistakes in my trading. I also have my share of winners. There is a reason that pencils have erasers. We all make mistakes, but that comes with the territory in the learning process. However, there are no better teachers in this process that the panel that moderates the Lagoon, tirelessly, each and every day, from sunrise to sunset, and many a times, the hours in between. There are no better members, that come together, daily, in a very professional manner, and willingly share their knowledge. And, to the man who put it all together, Rev Shark, a shout out of sincere thanks for not only putting it all together, but being an equally active participant.

    Outstanding

This is an entertaining book that has a new and interesting way of looking at the market.. I like the idea of trying to benefit from using my small size rather than investing like I¿m a big institution. It made me think about the way I should approach investing given my particular circumstances and gave me some good ideas. There are a lot of good insights and it is well written and entertaining.
