Overview

New York Times Best Seller!
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched both readers and reviewers. A true tale of self discovery, ghosts, slavery, murder, family and perseverance, this remarkable story follows 40-something Laine, an ordinary mom, who moves with her family to an 18th century Maryland plantation and wakes up suddenly psychic, and the journey she makes to find herself again.
Who knew Laine Crosby, former marketing executive at The Weather Channel, had the gift of being a Psychic Medium?  Not even Laine, that is, until she moved from Atlanta to the property of an eighteenth century Maryland plantation and woke up talking to a former slave buried in her backyard!  Besides going through culture shock, she soon learned that the property was loaded with spirits, largely from a slave cemetery. When they overheard her tell her kids about spiritual realities, they came calling. Lots of them.
Investigative Medium - the Awakening, examines the gift that was thrust upon Laine who was at first surprised, and then upset, and over time and through experience, embracing of this new way of life. Laine’s husband, Chris, twins Annie and Caleb, and even her Jack Russell terrier “Steve” have peripheral ghostly involvement, so it is a family affair, although at first an unsettling one.
Along Laine’s journey, she meets an unlikely friend, the spirit of Jannette, once nanny to the children on the plantation where she lives. Laine finds similarities in her own life and Jannette's, and with Jannette's friendship, Laine begins her journey down a path of self discovery. Jannette has had a similar tussle with racism and sexism from her 19th-century circumstances to Laine’s struggle with prejudices against her spiritual abilities. So, the two stories are parallel. With Laine’s new abilities, she becomes Jannette's voice, bringing her back from the antebellum South to tell the incredible story of her life as a slave, and a tender romance is revealed.  Interwoven with Laine’s personal story, are the first hand accounts of former slaves Jannette and Bill, and others.
Once Laine accepts her gift, it is her mother who, from beyond the grave, helps Laine find a way to surrender, and at long last give up on the life she dreamed of having, in order to have the life she was meant to live.  Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Investigative Medium - the Awakening is funny, thrilling and inspiring. The book examines the gift thrust upon Laine, and her acceptance and eventual surrender to the life she is supposed to live.

Editorial Reviews

Post-Newsweek - Kevin James Shay
"Laine writes that she is 'not an angel or a saint, a demon or a witch. I'm just a mom who goes to church, volunteers at my children's elementary school, and regularly burns pizza. I am completely ordinary.' Laine may be ordinary in some ways, but she tells an extraordinary story."
Psychology Today - Dr. Katherine Ramsland
"Laine's talents are well suited to helping historians, historical writers, taphophiles, cold-case detectives, and missing-persons organizations. Watching how her gifts affect her family is its own intriguing narrative."
Ancestry Magazine - Janice Bernice
"'No one is unimportant,' Laine says. She teaches us that love binds us to the next world. God is right there and answers prayers of all people, both living or dead."

Meet the Author

Laine Crosby is a mother, wife, professor, writer, medium, and proud Southerner. As the daughter of Atlanta Civil War Author/Historian, C.P. Crosby, Laine grew up cataloging and cleaning cemeteries while helping her father do genealogical research. She was known to have the uncanny ability to find lost graves whether she was in a cemetery or just had a feeling where to go. As she grew older, she focused on her education and a career in marketing and public relations spanning two decades, until finding herself suddenly psychic.

Laine began her professional writing career at the age of sixteen as a student editor for The Purple Cow, an Atlanta monthly, before earning an Economics degree at Agnes Scott College, an MBA from Georgia State University, and then completing additional postgraduate business studies at Georgia Tech, the University of London, and the University of Tours. Her corporate career spanned two decades in the capacity of director/vice president, building businesses, positioning brands, and launching products for major corporations and start-up companies. Laine has also worked as a corporate and freelance writer, developing advertising and public relations campaigns, corporate marketing materials, and writing for business and women’s shelter publications.

In 2004, Laine moved to a haunted house on an old Maryland plantation and life has never been the same. Since then, she has worked as an Investigative Medium helping historians, historical organizations, authors, archaeologists, and law enforcement, discover details about history. Laine’s future plans include writing more about her adventures, driving to swim practice, and continuing to scrub tomb stones.

Laine lives on the property of an eighteenth century plantation in Derwood, Maryland with her husband Chris, teenage twins Annie and Caleb, and Jack Russell Terrier, Pete. This is her first book.

What an insightful read! I started reading it at 9 pm and it took all I had to turn the light off at 1 am, I awoke at 8 am and was finished by 10. I could not put it down. The validations through the historical research alone should soothe the skeptics, but the view into Laine's everday life proves that we are given blessing from above. I am not good with words, but this book truly moved me.

Marketing executive Laine Crosby's life is about to change forever.  The new journey she is about to embark on takes her away from her beloved mother and Georgia home to the faux south, Maryland.  She discovers the 18th century antebellum home she lives in was a working plantation with slaves.  Her backyard was also a cemetery.  She meets and befriends some of the departed residents while learning of their lives on the plantation.  After some self questioning, Laine embraces her special gift from God and accepts that this is what her life is meant to be.   She also shares some glimpses into her family's lives and how this gift affects them.  You will laugh, cry, and be touched by Laine's sharing of her  continuing journey and how everything present  and past intertwines.  We learn our spirits are the keeper of our memories from our life here on earth.  This book left me wanting more.  Looking forward to reading upcoming books from this series.

    A great read!

I totally enjoyed this book cover to cover. Ms. Crosby reels her readers into her book from the first page and leaves them wanting more of her intertwining storylines with every chapter. She shares the events of her life as a wife, mother of twins, daughter, medium and author in a relatable, humorous manner. Throughout her non-fiction novel, Laine educates her readers about her life with her developing psychic gift and its differing abilities.
Because I was disappointed to have finished this book, I immediately ordered her second book about spiritual cleansing! I recommend that one as well.

What an amazing book! It was so interesting on so many levels. To be able to experience history and to know what really happened in a time so long ago was just amazing! Also to have the view into someones real life- to be able to feel what they feel when you loose a parent- it was heartbreaking but yet there is comfort in knowing that there is a way to still know that they are still there. I know I will never look at a yellow butterfly the same way ever again.
I can't wait until the next book!!!!

I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly. From the moment I started to read the book I couldn't stop reading and actually finished it in 2 nights. I was disappointed only by the fact that I finished it and there was no more to read. So, I will definitely be reading it again while I wait for her next book. As Laine Crosby is telling her story she makes you feel as though you are right there beside her experiencing it with her. It was an emotional roller coaster ride for me, I found myself smiling, laughing out loud and also in tears at some parts. It isn't just a story about a person discovering her physic gifts, to me it is a book that gives the reader hope for those who have lost someone and to know that their loved ones are not only okay but are still with us. She shares her personal story and she also shares some life stories from those who have contacted her from beyond. This is a special book and one that I think everyone should read. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
