Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of five in the "Money Smart" series, this edition discusses the concept of investing and is aimed at upper elementary students. The eight chapters include: Invis-All: A Science-Fiction Tale about Investing, Investing: What is It and Why Do It?, Inflation: Another Reason to Invest, The Stock Market, Bonds and Mutual Funds, Real Estate, Gold and Collectibles and A Rainy Day: The recession of 2007 to 2009. Using an interesting layout, bold type, boxed items of interest and color photos, the book provides an appropriate and absorbing introduction to investing using an historical as well as contemporary approach. Beginning with a hypothetical, humorous yet plausible story that illustrates the ever changing world of investing, the book provides students with useful information about the ups and downs of investing and just the right amount of facts and figures to understand how families and individuals need this information to stay financially solvent. Parents may benefit from the book's discussions as well as many of the terms used in this edition are of interest to everyone. There is some repetition across the series which may have been intentional since they all involve the subject of money and are interrelated. A glossary of new terms, a bibliography, sources for further information and notes about the authors are included at the end of the book. It would have been a plus had newly introduced vocabulary been highlighted within the text, as well. Overall, it's a balanced and appropriate introduction on a subject that could not be more timely. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
