Overview

Story structure—the writing below the surface of the words—revealed in a helpful guide for both writers and readers

Acclaimed by successful screenwriters and authors, Invisible Ink is a helpful, accessible guide to the essential elements of the best storytelling. Brian McDonald, an award winning screenwriter who has taught his craft at several major studios, supplies writers with tools to make their work more effective and provides readers and audiences a deeper understanding of the storyteller's art.

When people think of a screenplay, they usually think about dialogue—the "visible
ink" that is readily accessible to the listener, reader, or viewer. But a successful screenplay needs Invisible Ink as well, the craft below the surface of words. Invisible Ink lays out the essential elements of story structure, using vivid examples from famous moments in popular movies as well as from one of his own popular scripts. You will learn techniques for building a compelling story around a theme, making your writing engage audiences, creating appealing characters, and much more.

I was first introduced to the concepts in INVISIBLE INK in Brian

I was first introduced to the concepts in INVISIBLE INK in Brian's 2-day workshop at 911 Media. Those two days CHANGED MY LIFE AS A WRITER. I learned the core of story and was overjoyed that there were real tips and techniques that would help me write a memorable story, no matter whether it was a script, a short story or a novel.

After taking Brian's class, I rewrote my current script in just a few weeks and a few months later that script placed in the Top 5 for the WA State Screenplay Contest and was a Semi-finalist in Creative Screenwriting Magazine's AAA Contest. I could not have done that without the concepts I learned from Brian McDonald and Invisible Ink.

I use my notes and Brian's generous handouts from class all the time. I'm thrilled that Brian's teachings are now in a book. Now more writers can discover what I did. No matter what kind of writer you are, you should buy INVISIBLE INK. Read it, absorb it, keep it by your dictionary and thesaurus (like I do) and become the writer you were meant to be. Write on!

    Great content

I've read a few books on how to write gripping and good stories, but this book has crystallized the core of what makes a story good.

I have to deduct a star for the Nook version which has been somewhat mangled in formatting. There are missing quotes, missing apostrophes and random new lines in the middle of sentences.
