School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-The first book focuses primarily on Iran's geography, with chapters about its cities, archaeological sites, agricultural products, and wildlife. The second introduces Iranian history and everyday life. The third title contains chapters on Islam and religious holidays, Nowrouz (the Persian New Year), food, music and dance, and a short section about Persian carpets. A brief section about the languages of Iran includes a table of English words and their Persian or Farsi equivalents. However, it does not include a pronunciation guide for the Persian words. Figuring out which topic is in which book can be problematic; for example, Land has a short chapter on the different ethnic groups that might more logically have been included in People. It's unfortunate that these volumes weren't condensed into one. All three have attractive, full-color illustrations. They do not provide detailed analysis, but they might be useful for reports for younger students or reluctant readers.-Kathleen E.
