Overview

Once home to the famed Hanging Gardens of Babylon, ancient Iraq was the birth-place of government, law, and the written word. Since then, foreign interventions and occupations in the region have diminished the inhabitants' ability to govern themselves. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, British authorities created Iraq from three separate provinces and installed Faisal as the country's new king. After establishing its independence in 1932, Iraq suffered from numerous revolts, royal and political assassinations, and coups d'etat. The ongoing struggle for ultimate power in Iraq came to an end when a revolutionary, Saddam Hussein, rose to power. After years of instigating war throughout the Middle East, Hussein's dictatorship ended when a U.S.-led coalition of forces invaded Iraq and captured the leader. Today, the situation in Iraq is one of the most hotly debated topics in the world.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
The Middle East has played a vital role in the politics of the Western world for decades, and it will continue to shape policy and governance for decades to come. It is important for children to understand the history that has shaped this turbulent region and its past and future influence on the United States. For the past several decades, Iraq has played a central role in the foreign policy of the United States, which has been instrumental in shaping the Iraqi government. And yet little is known of the recent history of this country, which has been so important in how the Iraqi people view the west and how they react to the present turmoil in their country. The text begins with the creation of the country at the beginning of the 20th century and outlines the roles western countries have played in the establishment of Iraqi governments throughout its turbulent history. This second edition has been updated with information about the recent war between Iraq and the United States. It highlights the difficulties that Iraq faced during and after the reign of Saddam Hussein. The text is part of the "Creation of the Modern Middle East" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-The 20th-century political histories of Iraq and Yemen are given detailed, reliable coverage here. Both titles open with brief historical introductions. The major focus in Iraq, however, is on the period after World War I to the present, with much information on Saddam Hussein. Weber examines both North and South Yemen, and the period since unification in 1990 receives comprehensive treatment. Photographs, mainly in sepia tones, are scattered throughout each book; a gallery of archival images at the end of Iraq seems to be mainly filler. The map in each volume is poor-difficult to read, omitting many places mentioned in the texts, or using different spellings. In Yemen, the al-Qaeda network is said to be made up mainly of "militant Islams," presumably meaning "militant Muslims." Virtually everything in the "Further Reading" sections is duplicated in the "Bibliography," and several of the Web sites offer nothing. Still, for good, clearly presented report material, these are serviceable selections.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
