This recent title presents a balanced view of Iraq through the end of 2006, making reference to future changes such as the implementation of the constitution and future challenges such as federalism, insurgency, etc. The series format includes an introductory chapter followed by chapters on topics such as physical landscape, Iraq through time, people and culture, government and politics, Iraq's economy, and Iraq today and in the future. The broad panorama of Iraq clearly paints a picture of a country blessed with resources but also subject to broad movements of people, religions, and empire. Little reference is given to primary sources; when the author writes "Saddam Hussein saw himself as a modern-day Nebuchadnezzar II. He believed himself to be a great Mesopotamian leader who would unite the Arab World under his Baathist government and bring the Arab national back into a Golden Age," support for this image would be welcome. Some fascinating statistics are offered: for example, one-third of Iraq marriages are Sunni-Shia marriages, thus bringing to question the force of the Sunni-Shia divide. This book is particularly appropriate for classes that include the history and politics of the Middle East, especially as the last chapter will spur a discussion of issues and conflicts that continue to face Iraq today and will likely have long-lasting consequences for the region. Supplementary material includes "Facts at a Glance," "History at a Glance," a "Bibliography" (including web sites), a "Further Reading" section (including web sites), and an "Index."
