This disc would make an excellent introduction to Celtic music in general, as it presents some of the most famous Celtic songs of all ("Whiskey In the Jar," "Greensleeves," "Loch Lomond") along with classic rebel songs such as "Foggy Dew," as well as a generous blend of other traditional styles that mark Celtic music. Humor is found in "Gentleman Soldier," the tale of a soldier who seduces a poor naive girl "in a sentry box done up in a soldier's cloak." There are nostalgic love songs plenty, old instrumental melodies, an unclassifiable ominous tale of impending doom ("Lord Randall"), Gaelic renderings, and even a song of the sea ("Fiddler's Green"). There are nostalgic love songs plenty, old instrumental melodies, an unclassifiable ominous tale of impending doom ("Lord Randall"), Gaelic renderings, and even a song of the sea ("Fiddler's Green"). Each songs is presented with confident mastery of the material by the artists, Spailpin and the Dublin Ramblers. The two groups serve a good counterpoint to each other, as the former have a prettier, lighter sound, while the Ramblers come across as a gruffer bunch.
