    Irish NAtional Living Treasures

In Japan they treasure old people as repositories of irreplaceable memories and knowledge. This book takes a dozen old people from different walks of life and gives us their exact words as they talk about their lives and the times they lived in. Too often, books about old people report in general terms what they say, and they usually steer clear of anything controversial. Here, you listen in to the conversations between the people and the interviewer, and sometimes you catch a conversation between two of the subjects of the book. And they don't just talk about the good old days. They have startlingly outspoken views on politics and tell stories of scandal and supernatural encounters. They travel to England and the United States and tell what those countries were like, forty and fifty years ago. And they tell their stories in very vivid language, often with little witty asides and powerful images.
