Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Tony Stark's origin story can be a delicate one to tell. It's the story of a genius billionaire playboy, captured by enemies and forced to create a super weapon. After creating this weapon, he has a change of heart and decides to use his power and influence for good (while retaining his bad-boy attitude). This picture book tells that story once again, in old-fashioned font and dated illustrations. In some ways this version follows the film version of the "Iron Man" story, but in other ways it differs—for example, the specific location and look of the environment in which Stark is captured (and where he invents the Iron Man suit) is substantially different from the film. Simplifying a story with such a grown-up character does run into problems, such as where Stark's luxurious lifestyle is described. The text reads: "He loved to have fun. And he loved the finer things in life." These words are accompanied by illustrations of Stark in a plane, at a beach with, and at a fancy dinner, all with a different beautiful woman. These are the only women featured in the entire book, and they are presented as objects in the most blatant way. Of course, this is how Stark's character sees them, but in a book intended for children, it is troubling to see objectification so blatant and unexamined. Although this will be popular among the myriad of superhero-obsessed children, popular demand is the only reason to purchase this title. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
