Overview

"Irony... is an impressive debut novel. The kidnapping story line is taut and suspenseful. Hurley knows Boston as well as any novelist out there. You will have a hard time putting this book down."

- T.J. English, New York Times best-selling author of Havana Nocturne and Paddy Whacked

Trisha Barron, a fifty-three-year-old woman, goes out for her daily walk. She is kidnapped and used as leverage against an alleged wrongdoing by her son, a young but prominent Boston attorney.

Irony... pulsates with a multitude of twists and turns that will keep readers engaged, guessing, or on edge from beginning to end. Set primarily in present day South Boston and the surrounding Greater Boston area, Trisha Barron is a single parent of attorney Bobby Barron. The kidnapping shreds her relatively mundane existence. It also puts her son's demanding professional life on hold as he and two unexpected but loyal allies endeavor to unravel the intricacies behind an ever-increasing enigma. Irony... temporarily takes its readers back to May of 1970, weaving a sequence of events-real, alleged, and imagined-into the ensuing thirty-eight-year period.

The expected result of this sequence of events, juxtaposed against the actual result and shockingly satisfying conclusion, manifest into the book's aptly chosen title.

I had the honor to engage in a conversation with Mr Hurley about his book before it was published. Fittingly enough Jay and I were sitting in a bar on Cape Cod where he had just received an award for his efforts on behalf of union ironworkers. He related to me how he got the idea for the book, and I was pleased to see that he made reference to that moment in the book. I am a voracious reader. I Really enjoyed this fabulous twist and turn journey through through southie and its environs, many familiar to me. I read it in 2 sittings and gave away 9 copies to friends as christmas presesnts. Well done Jay-looking forward to the next novel.

Normaly when reading at bed time, I like to finished the chapter Im working on before turning in for the night. With Mr. Hurleys book, more often than not, I was enlisted to continue reading well after my bed time due to an unexpected and thrilling plot twist that would keep me on the edge of my seat right up untill the very end of this book. Jay was able to put me on every dark corner and in every frightening conversation held on the mean streets of Boston. I hope someday, Im able to enjoy this book on the big screen.

Irony was a terrific read. As I read all my books, I'm one who takes his time and goes just a few chapters at a time. With Irony I just could not put it down, the ACTION the TWISTS and TURNS keep you in suspense the entire time. This would make a GREAT movie. Someone should get Matt and Ben a copy of this to read. I'll keep an eye out for the next Jay Hurley novel.

As soon as I started "Irony..." I could not put the book down. It was full of suspense and twists. The characters were very well developed and the plot was exciting. The added attention to the details of Southie made the book seem that much more real and added to the dramatic overtone of the plot. I would most definitely recommend this book to others. I cannot wait to read Jay Hurley's next book!

The story had enough twists that I never lost interest or attention. The plot was very well thought out. Never did I feel I was reading a novel by a first time writer

A few years back I had read a local newspaper article written by Jay Hurley. I was impressed then by the article and remember thinking that he knew how to tell a story and get his point across. This novel was well thought through and I found it hard to put down. It kept me spellbound until I finished it. I agree that it is hard to iamgine that this is his first book and I would love to hear that he was working on a sequel. Doll South Boston

I just finished reading "Irony...". It is one of the most interesting stories I have read. I couldn't put it down wanting to see what happens next. The plot twists and turns and how they tied together were amazing. It's hard to believe this is Jay Hurley's first novel. This would make a fascinating movie! Add this to your summer reading list. You won't be disappointed.

When "Irony..." arrived I put it aside and figured I would start reading over the weekend, but after glancing at the prologue I made short work of my plan. I could not put it down... it was great! Jay Hurley has a knack of bringing in a lot of remarkable characters whom the reader gets to quickly know then love or hate or fear. At the end of each page I was left wondering "what next?" and I had to read on to answer my own question. When I finished the book I was left with two questions: 1. When will the movie be made? 2. When can I order Jay Hurley's next book?
