Overview

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Most people know that Mindy Kaling as romance-hungry Kelly Kapoor on The Office, but this Dartmouth grad is also a busy comedy writer, playwright, and Off-Broadway performer. (She also won immortality as a Rolling Stone "hot hyphenate.") Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is her maiden book and, as its title reflects, Kaling's new persona mirrors Kelly's chronic low self-esteem, not to mention her shopping compulsions and obsession with snack foods. With Mindy's help, you will master complicating topics including best friends, non-traumatic things that make you cry, why not to peak in high school, and why men put on shoes so slowly.

Publishers Weekly
In this audio edition of her memoir, Kaling charts the course of her varied life, while offering often hilarious, sometimes poignant tips and words of wisdom mined from her childhood and adult life. Through a series of essays, lists, and anecdotes, Kaling recalls her childhood in Cambridge, Mass.—complete with girl clique dates to the Cheesecake Factory—moving to New York City, her eventual relocation to Los Angeles, and her current job writing for and acting on NBC’s The Office. Kaling’s narration is conversational, entertaining, bubbly, and spirited—and reminiscent of Kelly Kapoor, her character on The Office—and the result is a short but very enjoyable listen. Kaling’s fresh humor, one-liners, and analogies (e.g., “We clung to each other with blind loyalty like Lord Voldemort and his snake Nagini. I of course was Nagini”) make this audio worth listening to a second time and sharing with friends. A Crown Archetype hardcover. (Nov.)

It's like a lazy afternoon chatting with your quirky cousin (in your PJ's of course!)

I loved this (audio) book. I have to say, I am glad I purchased the audio version because so much of the humor is in Mindy's delivery. Mindy's delightful rambling is an invitation into the mind of a young, witty, charming, and hysterically funny woman. I found my self wanting to interject and converse with her because I became so wrapped up in the "conversation" we were having. As with most of the best conversations, Mindy travels from topic to topic relating her experiences and observations in a light hearted whimsical random fashion. She and I could hang all day long and talk about nothing while talking about everything at the same time. Does this review leave you curiously entertained, but no more informed that when we started? Good! That's how the book goes. And I loved it! Enjoy!

    I loved this book!

This book was witty, light, cheerful and absolutely adorable! It's a quick read and even if you are not a fan of The Office it would still be enjoyable. Mindy is very down to earth and surprisingly easy to relate to. I think this book would make an excellent Christmas gift and plan on buying it for my sister.

    NOT Self-Help, but seems awesome!

I've only read the Nook sample so far, but this book is not a self-help book, it is akin to Tina Fey's "Bossypants." Mindy Kaling explicitly says so in the Introduction to her book. It seems very funny and relatable so far, Im off to buy it now.

Is everyone hanging out without Kaling?

I bought Kaling's book after hearing my 27year old daughter talk about it and I LOVE it! Kaling's humor is off-beat, creatively inspired, fabulously self-depricating, sharply critical of stupidity that abounds in society and in short excruciatingly funny. I am sorry that I am running out of pages as I approach the end of this book! Laugh-out-loud funny!! (I want more!)

    Hilarious!

I feel like everyone in the world should read Mindy's book - it is life changing. It is one of the funniest books I have ever read - even better than Tina Fey's "Bossypants," AND all of Chelsea Handler's books. I have purchased it for all of my friends.

    Easy and hilarious read!

I was hesistant about this book at first as I thought it was going to be yet another cheesy Teenage-Self-Help book. To my surprise, I found myself engulfed and laughing out loud on more than one ocassion. A must read especially if you have been a transplant in search of career opportunities and failed miserably at it.

    quick & funny read

This is a "non-traditional" autobiography: Kahling makes hysterical and honest observations throughout her life, as well as adding in thoughts on random subjects, which are also super funny. Its a simple, quick read, maybe a few nights worth of reading or a lazy afternoon. I laughed out loud in many parts and I am not a fan of The Office or SNL and still thought it was relateable and humerous throughout.

Some really funny stuff, but it didn't need the first 100 pages

The second half is great, lots of funny observations and moments of "I know, right?" The first half is... less great. I felt like I had picked an age inappropriate book written for teenage girls specifically. Did I? Maybe. If I did, then I feel sheepish and I appologize. The least lovable thing of the first half is that I think the reader is supposed to feel some sense of relatability or mild sypathy. But Mindy had a great childhood and went to Dartmouth and had loving supportive parents and had friends and wasn't a weirdo outcast. She had a very All American upper middle class life, who wants to read about that? Oh and she goes on about being chubby which she is not. But, after all that it is funny and sort of relatable. Another note: words like "pajorative" should not be used more than once in a 200 page light read. Maybe not even a 500 page heavy read. Once is enough. But it only takes few hours to read, and who am I kidding? I was up all night and read it almost all in one sitting. Fun read.

    Cute book!

I love Mindy on The Office so when she came out with this book I was curious to learn more about her. The book was funny and surprisingly sweet. She comes across as a well-educated, grounded, funny, likeable young woman. I think almost any woman could relate to her. The book starts with her early childhood, through her struggles to break into the business and finally her success with The Office. It is a entertaining light read.
