Convincing a teenager that revision is a necessary part of the writing process is a feat unto itself. This reviewer should know because she has been trying for the last six years to help students learn to love the art of revision. As Gilmore writes, students want to write a paper and be done with it. Every teacher wishes it were that simple. Gilmore's book is full of excellent ideas to help students learn to love revision. The problem is that a teacher cannot just open this manual and pull out a strategy on a whim. One must sit with this book, read through, and internalize the information. Gilmore's manual is divided into seven chapters, ranging from revising content and revision strategies to revising with technology. He also provides several activities that will help students understand how to peer edit and rework their papers. Some of these methods include reading the papers aloud, working in pairs, and creating workshop groups. One useful technique is using the ten-minute revision checklist. The list is comprised of ten hints that students can use after they have finished writing a paper or an in-class essay. Gilmore's "rules" are also helpful and could be posted in a classroom so that students are reminded of them on a daily basis.
