Overview

Have you noticed that things aren’t as civil as they once were Or that rudeness is no longer an exception but a lifestyle Sure you have. All you need to do is set foot outside your door to see that bad manners are taking over everywhere. People are yakking on cell phones in restaurants, even at church. Folks in carpools wear enough cologne to make our eyes bleed. Complete strangers think it’s OK to rub a pregnant lady’s belly. Passengers abuse flight attendants, family outings to the ball park are ruined by rowdy drunks . . . a congressman heckled the President of the United States.

Well, Whoopi Goldberg has noticed all this and more and asked herself, “Is it just me” Unleashing her trademark irreverence and humor, her new book of observations takes a funny and excruciatingly honest look at how a loss of civility is messing with the quality of life for all of us.

So if your pet peeve is folks who talk in movie theaters like it was their living room, or if you get bugged by people clipping their nails and performing other personal hygiene next to you on the bus, or if you cringe when “please” and “thank you” get replaced by “gimme” and “huh” . . . you have found a kindred spirit. Because Whoopi has witnessed the growing disrespect and rudeness in our lives and realized she is not alone. And, as you’ll discover in these pages, neither are you.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Living as we do in the Golden Age of Miscommunication, it's sometimes difficult to say what we are really thinking without creating confusion or conflict. As moderator and co-host of ABC's frequently controversial talk show The View, Whoopi Goldberg knows what it means to dodge rhetorical bullets and keep the conversation going. In this practical guide, she teaches readers to observe verbal etiquette while getting their points across. Now in paperback and NOOK Book.

    Enjoyed It!!

I just finished reading this book & I wish I had numerous copies so I could hand one out to people I see everyday who exhibit the behavior she speaks about. I'm far from perfect, but I do attempt to use the manners I was taught, stay sane and respect myself as well as others. This book had to be written because common sense and common courtesy are just two of the things that are disappearing from our society, and at times it seems, no one cares a fig. Hopefully, you gave people something to think about. I found myself smiling, sometimes laughing out loud, at the observations. I also agreed with her on many points. Thank you Ms. Goldberg.

    Interesting

I was reading reviews on Whoopi's new book only to find that half the reviews were by readers who hadn't even read the book yet. Might we also consider this to be one of the oddities of our society today (writing a review for a book that isn't a review)? Granted, I'm doing the same thing here, but I'm trying to draw attention to this trend so that those of us out there who read reviews hoping to gain some insight about a book we may want to purchase can actually have a review by someone who has actually read the book!

    I love Whoopi!

I can't wait to read this book, I love her on the View. I love her movies and I love her stand up specials. 'd also like to suggest "When God Stopped Keeping Score," an intimate look at the power of forgiveness and yet, it's about so much more. I loved every minute of it. Given the chance, it could change your life.

    O.K. Book

This was an O.K. book. I enjoyed reading it, but probably wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone.

    Just a note

The premise of this book has been my main topic of discourse over the last two decades. It is also especially noticeable in my profession but another thought does occur. When being put off by others rudeness and childishness (for this is what behavior like this really is !), do you return the favor of rudeness in your complaint? I've also noticed this in display when becoming so incensed and/or overly concerned that we forget ourselves and commit the same offenses!
Ignore what you can and move on. The law of reciprocity is always in effect.

Here's Another Reason To Love Whoopi!

As a fan of the actress Whoopi, the comedian Whoopi and the talk show host Whoopi, this book offer up another side of the Whoopi that we only think we know--the author. This book is funny as it is insightful. If you are a true fan of Whoopi, you will love this book. I'd also recommend that you buy "When God Stopped Keeping Score," which is an intimate look at the power of God and forgiveness. You will be glad that you did.

    Whoopi is best at comedy

This book of all the books i read amazes me that a published would publish, probably just because of the well known name they thought people would think it might be a good book about Whoopi, instead it is in the form of somthing that would be good for a grade school reading. This in my opinion was a waste of my time and money - Whoopi i love your comedic work and as the host on the View, but a book like this is below a person of your known statue!!

Like her acting, not her writing.

Ms. Goldberg as an actress is fun to watch. However, reading this book is a little like listening to her screech her political opinions on "The View" and frankly it's just to much to absorb and becomes tiresome. I may share many of her views but her delivery leaves a lot to be desired. Yes...it's just you, and as always everything is about you.

    Who Knew?

Who knew Whoopi would be this insightful? I love her on the View and her stand up is great, but this book is really good. I also like to thank the person who recommended the book "When God Stopped Keeping Score." Now that book took a lot out of me because it made me face a lot of my demons. Then, there are the stories that actually brought me to tears. Oh, my God. I just love it. Check it out for yourself.

    WHAT is she talking about?

I didn't make it past the first chapter before I wanted my money back. She must have the shortest memory on the planet. Parents shouldn't be preventing their kids from watching Obama's lectures? How about 57 members of the Hollywood community taking out a full page ad in the New York Times telling people to bang pots and pans during Bush's speeches so no one would hear them. And she joined in the Bush bashing - badly. She sort of half excuses it but she never repeats what she said, which was ""That's why I'm here tonight. Because I love bush. But someone's giving bush a bad name. Someone has tarnished name of `bush.' Someone has waged war, someone has deliberately misled the country, someone has attempted to amend the constitution, all in the name of bush. The bush I know and cherish would never do such things. My bush is smarter than that. And if my bush is smarter than that, you can understand just how dumb I think that other bush is. And anyone who would wave to Stevie Wonder is not fully there. I will do whatever it takes to restore bush to its rightful place and that ain't in the White House. Vote your heart and mind and keep bush where it belongs." And this woman not only demands respect for Obama she says that anyone who dares criticize him in the slightest a bigot? I bet she doesn't hesitate to disrespect who follows him as well.

    Whoopi It's Not Just You!!!

I thought the book was fantastic and I love Whoopi and I think many of her points are very valid and I found it a very enjoyable read and would recommend to others, loved all her work and think she is such a genuine person, this is the first book of hers I have read but I would read others, I especially liked the part in the very beginning when she talks about drunk drivers and taking their cars away, I say Amen to that! It's such an easy solution to a very big problem!!!!

    Interesting Read

First of all, the cover is GREAT! This is a book of Whoopi's opinions and thoughts on numerous topics. Some of them are really funny, some are really serious, etc. If you like Whoopi, or even if you think you don't, this is a great book to see what she's all about and where she stands.
