Overview

Is Our Food Safe? looks at the food we eat and questions how much we can take for granted about its safety. Although strict regulations cover every aspect of food production, it is estimated that, in the United States alone, there are around 5,000 deaths from foodborne diseases every year. This book looks at food hygiene and the chemicals that are present in our food, as well as the issues surrounding the controversial subject of the genetic modification of food.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
This title is one of the books in the "Global Questions" series. It contains an index, a glossary, bibliography and websites for gathering more information. It also has colored, captioned photographs and charts that supply additional facts. Sidebars entitled "Forum," "Focus," and "Expert View" are found throughout the book. "Forum" presents two opinions about an issue, such as additives in foods; a question for discussion is found on page 25. "Focus" relates a personal experience directly related to the book, as on page 12, where a farmer describes his success in growing genetically modified cotton. Under the heading "Expert View," Roger Beachy, a plant pathologist, provides a quote on page 11 concerning genetic engineering. The publisher recommends that this series be used in grades six and up, but much of the text is very technical and most probably requires the assistance of an adult when used in the lower age bracket. The topic is certainly a current one that may fill a need for information. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
