Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
This book, designed for elementary-school guided reading groups, focuses on climate change and how it may affect weather in the future. Each two-page spread addresses a single topic, ranging from a depiction of scientists studying layers of ice and soil to determine ancient weather patterns, to an explanation of how greenhouse gases are trapped in our atmosphere. Each spread offers easily-digestible factoids about the topic discussed, as well as illustrations that effectively reinforce the concepts. Because of the book's brevity, there is little in the way of detailed information, but concepts such as global warming, the consequences of melting polar ice, and the probability of severe storms in the future are well presented. Young readers will especially like the illustrations that show extreme weather in action. Also included in the book are one hands-on experiment, suggestions for how readers can help mitigate their own carbon footprint, a glossary, index, and list of resources, both print and digital.
