Overview

Sam and his friends are camping overnight, and even though their tents are pitched no farther from home than Sam's backyard, it's still an adventure. But night has fallen and Sam is feeling nervous. Is a monster lurking somewhere in the dark shadows? Sam begins searching, and kids who open this book can search with him. Adopting the touch-and-feel format on every page, this book features large color illustrations with a cardboard pocket on each picture. Kids are invited to reach into each pocket to help Sam seek out the monster. First, Sam tiptoes into the dark garage as the other kids look on. He reaches beneath an old blanket, where somebody--or something--might be hiding, and he touches something moist. Is it the monster's drool? A pocket into a tent's opening lets Sam--and young readers--touch something furry. The monster's body? When Sam and his readers reach down into a dry well, they touch something with spiky points. The monster's tail? At last, reaching beneath a canvas tarpaulin that covers an old row boat, Sam and his readers touch the monster himself! A big pop-up head springs out from the book's final two-page spread. All the other kids flee, but Sam is no longer frightened. This monster is smiling and friendly.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A boy named Sam is having a backyard campout with his sister and friends, but he’s sure a monster is hiding nearby. The garage, the tent, and a well are all potential hiding places, and readers are invited to slide their hand underneath five raised paper panels where sticky, furry, and nubbly textures await. Sam is sure he’s feeling the monster’s drool, “hairy back,” and “stubby tail,” but is proven wrong each time—until the pop-up finale. The use of a black font against a dark blue night sky adversely affects legibility at times, but most will look past that to enjoy the lightly spooky fun. Ages 36. (July)

In a barely disguised remake of Is That You, Wolf? (2012), intrepid readers are invited to stick their hands into a series of pockets…and feel what lies within. For this iteration, Cox changes the cast in his shadowy nighttime cartoons from farm animals to a group of children gathering for a campout, searching for protagonists from a piggy to young Sam--who likewise searches a yard and outbuildings to make sure no monster is present. On each alternate spread, a tarp, tent flap or other possible concealment is a pouch bearing the legend: "Slide your hand in if you dare… / Monster may be lurking so BEWARE!" What actually lurks out of view is a patch of fur, sticky goo or textured plastic just right for a momentary shock. Each discovery turns out to be bunnies, a toy or something else innocuous, though, which nicely sets up a large pop-up shocker on the final spread. An interchangeable knockoff but still tailor-made to spark bursts of delighted nighttime screaming. (Novelty/picture book. 4-7)
