Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bruce Adelson
This delightful, brightly colored book for new readers introduces us to a young frog who, fresh from his pond home, journeys to the zoo. Perching himself in a tree, he asks all the animals he meets if he can play with them. Their refusal is vexing to our main character, especially since each animal walks by the tree carrying party paraphernalia, demurring to the frog's request since "they are going to a party." Our frog discovers companionship in the end when he learns the party the other animals were going to is for him. Young children will enjoy this story which is accompanied by attractive illustrations.
Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of six titles in a "Books for New Readers" series, this simple story, illustrated with outrageous animal cartoons, uses a repetitive strategy to help emergent readers master the text. There's information at the end of the book for becoming an official "reading buddy," a club to promote reading among youngsters. A fun way to promote the good habit of daily reading in the family.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 1-Children will enjoy practicing their reading skills with these titles that feature a zoo full of animal friends. The simple, repetitive texts are appropriate for those learning to decode sentences. The plots are straightforward: Is the Spaghetti Ready? deals with mealtime, New at the Zoo with forming friendships, and Troubles with Bubbles with bathing away the day's dirt and dust. The vocabulary consists of one- and two-syllable sight words that readers will recognize. The bold, clear type is printed against crisp white backgrounds. The brightly hued cartoon illustrations humorously reflect the text and provide visual clues to the content. Useful additions to beginning-reader collections.-Maura Bresnahan, Shawsheen School, Andover, MA
