Overview

As the United States military simultaneously transforms itself and engages in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), several things are clear. Technological dominance is important and does give our forces the advantage on both conventional and asymmetric battlefields. But there is more to think about in regards to technology and technological dominance. First, technology can be defeated, so there is constant pressure to improve today's technology to meet the threats of tomorrow. Second, while we can share cutting-edge technology with our allies, our competitors can often acquire similar technology through the global economy which has made the technology available to all. Thomas Friedman, in the World is Flat, epitomizes this viewpoint as he states, "...if you can do it, you must do it, otherwise your competitors will...." This availability of technology serves as a means of reducing or eliminating the advantage we hold or may have held over our competitors.
