Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In this series of interviews covering Allende's life and individual works, Correas Zapata, San Jos State University Professor of Latin American Literature, interviews the widely read Latin American author. Allende writes in the prologue that the professor knows her work better than anyone. Besides teaching Allende's work, the author co-edits Allende's manuscripts with Allende's mother and interviewed people in Chile for this project. Initially, Allende thought prior interviews and her own Paula said everything, but this proves otherwise. Her responses reveal her creative process as well as the origins of her stories and characters. Allende is honest, humorous, open, and entertaining. The glimpse into her life and family enhances the reader's understanding of the autobiographical elements in her work. Love, passion, tragedy, and humor are evident in both her life and her writing. As in The House of Spirits, where the spirit world enters ours, Allende's two worlds, reality and fiction, come together and at times seem indistinguishable. Whether reading for pleasure or literary purposes, audiences familiar with her work will find this book both satisfying and insightful. Appropriate for academic and public libraries.--Ana-Elba Pav n, San Mateo Cty. Lib., CA
