Overview

This comprehensive study goes beyond the lore surrounding Isabella and Ferdinand and their popular depiction as the harbingers and principal movers behind Spain’s Golden Age and analyzes the political and social conditions on the Iberian Peninsula that made their ascension to the throne possible. It also discusses the achievements of the Catholic monarchs after they assumed the reigns of authority: the creation of the instruments of power, the first steps of Spanish expansion in Europe and abroad, and the limits of their work and power.
