Children's Literature - Christy Devillier
A preschooler learns the essentials of hand washing, including why it's important and how to properly perform this ritual. After young Carlos plays with chalk, clay, and mud, his hands are dirty. He sees his friends wash their hands, but Carlos doesn't want to waste time getting clean. There's too much fun to be had. Soon, Carlos' friends and his teacher, Miss Cathy, She invites the class to talk about the merits of hand washing and when it should be done. Afterwards, they show Carlos how to get squeaky clean with water, soap, and an easy song to sing while scrubbing away dirt and germs. This portion of the story offers additional visual aids to reinforce the lesson. The end of the book provides step-by-step illustrations for hand washing, the words to the "Scrubba Dub Song," and five questions to engage children in thinking about this topic. Knowing why, when, and how to wash one's hands is a critical lesson for preschoolers and kindergarteners, the intended audience for this practical book; Murphy drives home the message through appealing characters and a straightforward story. This illustrated title is one of many in the "I See I Learn" series. Reviewer: Christy Devillier
