Overview

It's spring on Nantucket and everything is perfectly normal, until a sudden storm blankets the entire island. When the weather clears, the island's inhabitants find that they are no longer in the late twentieth century...but have been transported instead to the Bronze Age! Now they must learn to survive with suspicious, warlike peoples they can barely understand and deal with impending disaster, in the shape of a would-be conqueror from their own time.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A cosmic disturbance transports the island of Nantucket and its inhabitants over three thousand years back in time to the shores of a Stone Age America. In addition to coping with the day-to-day problems of survival and the trauma of losing all connection with the modern world, the residents of the time-stranded island find their lives complicated by the presence of native tribes across the water. Stirling's (The Ship Avenged, Baen, 1997) imaginative foray into time travel should also please fans of alternate history. A good selection for most sf collections.

    Totally Loved it!

This is an exciting and interesting book! I loved reading it. If you like history and imagining what it would be like to live in a certain era, this is your book. I just finished it and went to look up the other books by this author and was so excited to find that this book was just the first in a series. I cant wait to read the sequels!

    Made me a Stirling fan

I just discovered this book in 2003. It is truly one that is hard to put down. I take it everywhere with me and read bits and pieces whenever I can. I look forward to Doctor visits and sitting in the waiting room. I haven't enjoyed a series as much since Weber's Honor Harrington series.

    Alternate Reality, Historical

This book is a very well written blend of early history (1500 B.C.), with thoughtful speculation about sustainable civilization. Characters are well developed, realistic, and varied. The plot and narrative are engaging.

Utilizes the classic mechanism of exploring an unfamiliar scenario to stimulate fresh thought about present and immediate issues. A thinking man's fantasy.

    Highly recommended.

    Fun - Fun - Fun

Boy is this a great series! Realistic characters, lots of historical information, tension, humor, action are packed into each page. This may be the best series since 'The Belgariad'. I left my copies in airports and regretted it later. A must read if you like time travel sci-fi.
