The Island of Sheep, the final Richard Hannay novel, is a rather strange story. It sets itself up for a rousing finale but falls short of its promise. Hannay comes to the aid of the son of an old ally he made a pact with in Africa decades ago. A gang is trying to take the family fortune away from the son by intimidation and extortion. Haraldsen. the target of the plot, is a Norwegian mystic and after a while the story became a bit too mythological for my taste. As a thriller it is a bit tame but Buchan's nature descriptions shine and keep the book from wandering totally into the mists.
