    more from this reviewer

    Awesome story! A must read!

I am not a HUGE fantasy reader, but there was something about the cover that drew me to ask the author to review her book. I am so glad that I did.

This book is wonderful! The characters are developed and you want all the crappy things that seem to be happening at once to just go away so they can have their happily ever after. But then I suppose if that happened, we wouldn't get to see them develop further!

The story is crafted in a wonderful fashion. You get to see different perspectives- something that Valerie has done well (I've read some stories where it should not have been done, ever.) You can feel the darkness of the Mages. I wanted to riot for the Shifters and rid them of their Blood Oath, who needs exile, right?

I cannot wait to read the second book, which Valerie is also allowing me to review! I highly recommend this book to all fantasy readers, and anyone that loves the actiony aspect of a good quest. Dude, just read the book everyone!

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*

I've been reading fantasy for over 30 years and lately I find myself bogged down in all of these 1000 page backbreakers that take so long to read and have just as many characters as they do pages. How refreshing to read a fantasy that was just one plot twist after another with characters I really cared about. i will definitely read the next book. This was a very good read!

    Good Read

Won't lie, the cover didn't impress me & I catch myself attempting to judge the inside with the outside. Fortunately, I read it anyway, enjoyed it & look forward to the rest of the series.

I am not a YA, but read more in that style because it feels like authors provide more energy/ action & drama to hold your interest (and apparently mine).

The 4 is because although it is good, I can't say I can't wait to read it again.

    Enjoy :)

    Omg. And it is free..

I am very stingy with mmy star ratings. Three stars indicates the author has done his or her job and I have enjoyed reading the book

Must read. Would be my award for fantasy book of the year. I dont think i have ever read a book that made me cry tears before.
4 especially gifted "shifters" or mages, in a land where all mqgic is outcast, suddenly find their world and lives ripped apart, when a 300 year old monstrous sorcerer and miss legions, attqck their outpost, an wipe out their entire ranks quickly.
What ensues is an adventure of lifetime, with highs and lows. The writing kept me enraptured. You will come to poinr in the book, where they stop being characters, and you begin to finish this book as their friends.
If you read anybook on nook, read this one.

    Excellent!

This was a great book! Over 800 pages and it was free. I found it listed under the paranormal genre but it is more like Science Fiction & Fantasy. If you like Lord of the Rings, then you might like this one. Has Elves, Dwarves, Magai, Demons, etc. Will definitely be looking into more books by this author.

    Good start to a series

From the writing, it feels like this is a young adult book, but I must state emphatically that it's most definitely NOT a book for kids. There are adult themes which I won't get into.

With that warning out of the way, it's still a very good story.

    Plot synopsis:
Beck is an earthshifter, meaning he can move the earth around him and use it to grant him strength. Kiernan is a mindshifter, meaning she can control people's actions if needed. She also has a mind-link with a great cat called Bajan, meaning they can communicate with each other through thought. Airron the Elf is a bodyshifter, meaning he can transform himself into any animal/monster/person shape that he has in his repertoire. And finally, Rogan the Dwarf is a fireshifter, meaning he can conjure and control flame.

All four of them are best friends who grew up together. In this world, anyone who is discovered to have shifting magic is exiled to a certain island. Thus the series is called "Island Shifters." A long time ago, an evil Mage caused a war that resulted in an immense loss of life and great devastation across the lands, and as a result, people now distrust magic, thus the exile of anyone with magic.

Now, that very same Mage is back to do it all over again, and it's up to our heroes to stop him. There is even a prophecy involved.

On the way they will deal with immense pain and loss. I will stress that their suffering can be hard to read at times. People can and will die in disturbing ways due to the evil Mage's, well, evil.

    My thoughts:
My predictions on what the prophecy meant were wrong. This story will take twists and turns that are unexpected, which is good because the guessing kept me engaged.

The book's downfall is, I think, the sexual themes. I won't go into detail here but I think I would like it more if these parts were toned down.

There is also a lot of action, and these scenes are well thought-out--though I admit that I started getting impatient near the end and started skimming some of them.

The characters are the highlight of the book. Beck is so sincere in his goals, you can't help but like him. Kiernan's jealousy and insecurity in her young love are realistic.

Unfortunately I feel that the four heroes don't have enough interaction despite them being best friends because the plot forces them to separate. And when they do get together they're always getting hurt! So they can't have that fun rapport that you sense is there, hiding underneath. The best we get is near the beginning, before the gravity of the plot hits them full-force.

In the end, I really liked it, and I will definitely be picking up the next one--but hopefully it won't be quite so depressing. Our heroes deserve a break.

    Pretty good.

I enjoyrd this book a lot. While it can get a little predictable, and there are some adult themes as is stated in the description there are a few good things. It has a unique way of magic that I have nevrr seen before and it's ending is satifying. The characters are unique and they are well developed. There are points where it drags a litte though; esspecially when reading from the enemy perspective.

    Disappointing read

While the concept is good, the execution is not. The story limps and stutters along. The characters, intriguing at first, became boring and predictable the more I read. I couldn't finish this one.
